how to get into any fraternity you want! (a guide)

by:

People always ask me how to get into a "selective house." However, people always screw-up, and they don't even know it. Here's what do do/not to do. Getting into a fraternity, much like life, requires strategy and game-planning.

1.) Introduce yourselves BEFORE rush.
A way to maximize your chances of receiving a bid is to meet the brothers before rush. Start a good conversation, get to know them and what they're about. Be charming, make jokes, stay in good taste. DON'T check your cell phone every 10 seconds, or else you'll seem like you're not that interested, and you will probably seem like a jerk.

2.) Don't Talk about Sororities/Parties
People think that frats are all about girls and partying. That's not true. It's about a brotherly bond. Make sure that you don't ask questions like "What sororities you hang with?" or "How much do you guys party?" It will make you look like you're shallow and that you can't contribute anything worthwhile to the house. You can get drunk and hookup anywhere. A fraternity is about brotherhood.

3.) Ignore the other guys rushing
Every "Rush Week" there are a bunch of guys that rush, that spend 3/4ths of the time talking to each other. The other guys rushing will not get you a bid in the house, so don't hold long conversations with them. I'm not saying be rude, but you should be focusing the majority of your attention on a brother in the house.

I'm sorry, this was too long, I couldn't finish in one slide.

4.) Do background research before rush
It's imperative that you know SOMETHING about the house that you want to spend your next 3-4 years in. Find out what they're about. If you want to be FIJI, do some research to see what their core values are. Every fraternity has core values that are important to them. If you know this before hand, and can emphasize these values to the brother, it is more likely that you'll seem like a good fit for the fraternity.

5.) Conversations go TWO ways!
Stay engaged in the conversation. Look the brother in the eye, and don't look at your phone every 20 seconds. Ask him questions back. Also, elaborate on the questions. If you ask him, "what's your major" and he says "biology", don't end at that. Ask him "why that major?" "what career are you going to pursue with that" "why does that interest you?" It's a natural human response to like people who seem to have a genuine interest with you.

6.) Be Authentic
Don't try to be a fratty douchebag. The guys who try this almost always fail, and they usually do not get bids. Be the most interesting, charming version of yourself.

7.) Come with an interesting life story
What are your passions, goals, dreams and accomplishments? Think about this, because you will want to reveal as much information as you can about yourself in these few rush days. The more they think they know about you, the more likely you are to get a bid.

8.) NEVER EVER SAY, "I want to be in this house because it's popular."
Even if this is true, please don't say it. After you see this, the brother you spoke to will see right through you, and you whatever hopes you had of getting into the fraternity will be destroyed.

I agree with you.
Coming from a guy in a selective house, if you have to plan and think about how you are going to act, look, or say, you are trying too hard. Kids rushing should already know how to act around guys who they don't know, and understand that these are the guys who hold the keys to getting into a worthy organization. Basic inherent social skills for the situation I suppose. Beyond that, it's how legitimately cool you are and there are no rules for expressing that.

Don't be someone you are not. You will get douched as a pledge in a heartbeat even if you slip through the cracks.

Researching core values is pointless. Every fraternity has them and learning them is what pledge term is for, unless the pledge process is a joke, which some houses at state are.

I will agree with one piece of advice and that is to definitely get in contact with some rush chairs and try to hang out with some houses before rush. That will be to your advantage for 3 or 4 houses.

It is a great guy. But i want a guy in my house who doesn't need to be told to do these things. When i get to be selective about who I take, I want someone who doesn't need the help. I want someone who can figure this out on their own.
