question to sororities at u of a.
by: Yikes
I’m going to be a freshman this fall at U of A. I have a really tight group of girl friends here in my hometown in Ohio but we’re all dispersing off to different colleges. I really want to get involved at U of A and specifically join a sorority! I’m super open to any sororities, from what I’ve seen all the sororities at U of A are amazing.
But I have a 2.7 gpa and online it says 3.0 required for highschool! So Am i still allowed to rush? and If I do will I just get dropped from every sorority? And would having a letter of recommendation or explaining my circumstances (me coming from a private school that focused more on preparedness than grades and then going to public highschool that used a 4.0 grading system) make a difference?

Some houses can take a few girls with lower GPAs but you just need to go into recruitment being okay with the fact that a lot of houses you may really like will have to drop you based on their own recruitment processes. The process each sorority uses is different and in some cases a rec letter may help but definitely won't for all.You could always try this year and if the results aren't what you wanted, get your college GPA to a solid point and re-rush next fall. :)

So happy to hear that you want to go through formal recruitment! Some houses are very serious about grade risks, so you'll need to go into recruitment understanding that some houses are going to drop you right away. If you're not okay with that, you can always wait to rush in the spring or the following fall, or you can always go through recruitment this fall anyways, and not take a bid or drop before initiation if things don't work out how you want them too. You never know, you might find your home in one of the houses that takes grade risks. A lot of houses are very understanding if you have extenuating circumstances for your grades, too. I know a lot of the girls in my house are grade risks and they are so happy where they ended up. You're going to hear this a lot if/when you go through recruitment, but trust the process and it will all work out!

Congratulations! Good for you for choosing UofA! For sure go through recruitment, you will meet friends for a lifetime!
My advise is to be well prepared, get many recommendations from alums for each sorority. Pull up a template on how to create a sorority resume and plan meetings with alums who you are asking to write you a recommendation. These recommendations need to be received by the rush chair of each chapter about a month before recruitment starts. The more each chapter knows about you the more invitations for second and third rounds you will get. This gives the chapters and you more time to get to know each other. You should be able to find alums by asking your mom and her friends or if you were in NCL (a mother daughter national service organization for middle - high school age girls) you might have luck asking these mom's.
Online you will see suggestions on how to dress for each round, remember it will be warm in August and you will want to wear comfortable shoes.
When you ask an alum for a recommendation be prepared to provide a resume of your high school and community activities, leadership awards, gap and SAT scores, plus include a photo of yourself and and Greek affiliation in regards to your parents, ( were your parents in Sororities or Fraternities or your grandparents or uncles or aunts... You may be a legacy to a top house which gives you higher consideration.
Good luck, your are going to have an experience of a lifetime and will love University of Arizona!!
