joining a sorority, but these ranks freak me out?
by: newestpledge
Hi, so I'll be a freshman in a year at U of A, and I've been wanting to join a sorority really badly but all of these ranks are really starting to worry me. My aunt was an APhi, so that was one of my top choices along with DG and Gamma Phi Beta. I've been doing a lot of research on the houses at U of A and now I'm a little nervous about pledging any because of how badly they all sound. I plan on being an engineer so I'd need a house that still cares about academics and philanthropy, and I'm really looking for sisterhood over partying, so please please please give me accurate ratings on sororities because at this point I'm not sure I want to pledge any of them after reading so many awful things. Thank you so much!

just go through recruitment & you'll find where you belong. DG, GPhi, and APhi all might have reps of being sloppy but they're all good houses and in every house (yes, even APhi and -god forbid you go- Kappa), you'll find girls that have the same priorities as you and someone you can connect with. Also, most girls in sororities care about their grades and academics, even if you wouldn't think so. It's not a coincidence that greek women have higher GPAs than non-greek women

The best thing you can do is go through recruitment with an open mind. Doing that will allow you to make your own judgments about what houses you actually like.
Also- I got dropped from my top pick house (the one my best friend was in), so just because you want a certain house, it doesn't mean you'll get it.
If you have your hopes set on a house it'll be that much harder if you get dropped.

Don't let anyone tell you "awesome alphas are like this" and beautiful betas are like that." Girls can only speak for what THEIR OWN houses are like. Sure, they can spout of reputations and cut other houses down, but when it gets down to it, reputations are only reputations. One house may be labeled lame, but their sisterhood may be great. This site may call a house "forgettable," but they may be your most memorable. Girls may say a house is uninvolved, but you may find this to be the exact opposite of that house's reality.
What I'm saying is, this site is full of ridiculous generalizations and a few girls being nasty. This is NOT how Greek life really is. If you go in with an open mind, you will find your house, and you'll love it, regardless of what anyone on this site has to say about it. You can let people who post nasty things here discourage you, but I encourage you not to. Had I listened to this site I wouldn't have touched my house with a ten foot pole, but I didn't listen. I ended up joining an amazing group of women, being happier than I've ever been, and loving the U of A more than I ever thought I would.
