is race a factor in sorority recruitment?
by: Nickname
Next year I plan on rushing, however, I am mixed (black & white). So, since most sororities are mainly white, would my race(s) hurt my chances at getting into a sorority?

No not necessarily , I know mixed girls in sororities , as they say trust the process you may not get the house you want but you also have same chance of getting the one you want , it’s all about if they like you and if they feel you fit in . U of A is more diverse in greek life than for say Greeks in the south . I saw a plate-cleaner dark-skinned girl in alpha phi .

I can only speak for the house I'm in (which of course we can't say on here), but if there is a great connection, we would welcome anyone with open arms. Many chapters have women of a variety of backgrounds and I am certain you will find you are comfortable in lots of them!

Every house says race does not matter but in reality our numbers don't match our words. The UA student body is only 51% white and will be majority-minority within the next 5 years. That means proportionately about half of all Greeks should be non-white, but we all know that is not the case. Not even close, even when you consider the members of the Divine Nine and all the multicultural fraternities and sororities.
Although we do not like to admit it, we are creating barriers to entry and excluding non-white people either financially through higher dues or culturally through unconscious bias or straight up prejudice. When I was a freshman a bunch of girls from my hall were interested in joining a sorority but didn't because they weren't white and didn't feel comfortable. Most houses have a small handful of minorities and say, "look! we are diverse!" We can do better than that. We MUST do better than that. This is partly why the Greek system is dying everywhere.

race 100% does not matter. I am in a mid tier sorority and I am not white and I feel accepted and loved. Never did I once feel alienated during recruitment in any house at all. Trust the process and you will find your home. And if a house doesn't want you because of the color of your skin, then they aren't worth your time. The negativity on this website is heinous and unrealistic. The greek community at UA is welcoming to all, I promise <3

WTH are you talking about? Cultural bias, as in overtly or covertly "othering" non-white people and making them feel less than welcome..
