asa- should i join?

by:

Is it worth being a part of ASA as a freshman? I want the sorority experience, but I don't know if I should just wait to rush top sororities as a sophomore in the fall next year.
Thanks.

You wont get into any top as a sophomore unless you are literally amazing and drop dead gorgeous. That said, you have a shot at mid and bot tier chapters that offer a better experience than ASA. If you want something more immediate than waiting until next fall I'd even recommend checking out tri delt over ASA.

Thanks for proving how shallow top sororities can be.. yikes

Thank you! I agree, is tri delt still recruiting? Does anyone know?

That's not true that you can't get in as a sophomore. I'm in what is considered a "top" house and we had more than a few sophomores in our pc. ASA, as well as other houses would take you as a sophomore if you did want to wait and try out recruitment next fall!

I agree with waiting until fall or joining tri delt instead of asa. I think tri delt is done recruiting for the semester but should be doing it again in the spring. I could be wrong though. If you contact their recruitment chair and let them know you're interested in joining they could give you more info.

tri delt will definitely take new members if they show interest. They're not actively recruiting, but will still give out bids. Email their recruitment chair and express interest.

I'm sorry but you won't get "the sorority experience" by joining ASA. Their whole deal is being the anti-sorority sorority with no house and chapter meetings in apartments or classrooms or whatever. I mean if you're doing it just to tell people who don't know any better that you are in a sorority, then fine, but you won't gain the experiences or memories of being in a real sorority through ASA. It will be more like joining a club.

Relax. Some women don't need to live in a sorority house to engage with and belong to a strong lifelong friendship group that provides leadership opportunities and business/social connections. We and ASA know that number may be small, but we also know Arizona is unable to offer housing for its newest NPC group.

ASA chose to present for colonization despite this ONE student-perceived impediment to THE sorority experience. NO OTHER NPC GROUP presented. Delta Zeta only EXPLORED the opportunity to present but did not, unsatisfied with our catty campus sorority culture and lack of land/housing. Our campus/panhel could have remained catty and told single-presenter ASA to get lost, but they knew better than to reject any NPC willing to research our campus then give it their all to make a new chapter thrive.

The opportunity for Arizona to change its unpleasant sorority culture and accept ASA for what she brings (and not for what she doesn't) will allow AZ to open for sorority expansion again in the future, this time hopefully displaying a more welcoming and panhellenic attitude toward any group willing to add their NPC chapter's name with ours. And please remember, it's not a given that any NPC group chosen to colonize at AZ after ASA will be able to have (or even desire) housing.

ASA will be a top house in a couple of years so I'd say go for it. Also it looks great to be a founding member

the girls in ASA are worse than the girls in tri delt. not even just looks wise, they have worse social skills and can barely hold conversations. its a "sorority" for girls who want to claim they're in a sorority

I was a little hesitant at first for the same reason but I joined ASA and I love it! It’s obviously gonna be different than a traditional sorority experience since it’s our first year but it’s still pretty cool to be a founding member and I definitely have lots of fun! I would honestly just recommend coming to our sisterhood events and checking it out!

If you meet some girls from ASA and love them and can accept the fact that you won't have a house and a big and all that then I think you should join, but if you rush again next year no matter what you will get a bid from a house, and all 12 houses bottom, middle, or top, will provide you with the sorority experience. Don't go rushing for a "top sorority" like you stated, go rushing for a sorority and enjoy where you end up because no matter what you will get the sorority experience with sisters, bigs and littles, a house to hang out at with a chef for meals, philanthropy events and much more. I know lots of sophomores who got bids from top houses but they got the bid because that's where they fit in. Just rush for where you fit in and enjoy it!

Don't join ASA. They've already had a ton of members drop. That should tell you everything you need to know.

If you want to be in a sorority, join tri delt. If you want to be in a club, join ASA.

You say you want the sorority experience, and if that includes living in a house than ASA will not uphold that standard for you.

Alpha Sigma Alpha (ASA) began life in 1901, fifty years after the first NPC group formed in 1851. ASA joined the NPC Sorority Group in 1951, fifty years after NPC first formed. ASA began as a sorority for teachers with chapters mainly at teaching colleges. That mission changed to expanding among bigger-name campuses in 1951. Their membership numbers do not equal that of the much older and traditional NPC groups, yet their own history is solid and unique.

Every NPC group has the desire to expand their reach onto campuses where they have never had chapters. Arizona gave ASA their blessing to colonize and thrive. The Arizona panhellenic community looks forward to ASAs new members successfully completing their colonization and becoming an installed chapter in the near future.

ASA is pathetic. The reason no one is supporting them is because they are trying to build themselves up by tearing down other houses. They are starting rumors about themselves that Kappa Sig is asking them to homecoming, they're telling people that other sororities are going to get kicked off and then they will take their house, and are going around telling everyone they are "the new alpha phi." It's honestly so pathetic and that's why no one likes them. They're also barely even a sorority. They're a CLUB.

i get that it's weird that ASA is panhellenic and doesn't have a house. BUTTT basically every chapter outside of panhellenic doesn't have a house, and they've been doing just fine without one. you shouldn't need a house to build those close friendship
