what is the gphi like? (not a pnm)

by:

I am a GPhi at a Northern school and am transferring to U of A this semester. I was planning on attempting to move to the GPhi chapter down at U of A as I have had a fab time as a member of my previous GPhi chapter; however, as I read the comments I get the vibe the GPhi here might be completely different than mine?

While at my campus the GPhi is also considered a top 3 chapter, as is the one here, we strongly value involvement and grades. My old chapter was only about 200 women, so pretty small. And while the social scene was important, it was only supplementary to sisterhood, involvement and grade. I really enjoyed this time of environment.

Do you guys think the same things are valued at this GPhi or what would you say is valued?

At Arizona (in general and not just in Gphi) priorities for sorority members tend to go in this order: Social life > Academics > Sisterhood > Involvement.

You should know by now that U of A is party school. But that doesn't mean we don't value academics. If all we did was party, no one would ever graduate. If all girls had bad gpas, there would be no sororities.

Within each house, each member has their own order of priorities. But the list I made above is generally how most sorority members view things.

I'm not in Gphi, so I can only speak to how they are perceived as an outsider. However, I do actually have a friend that was a transfer Gphi. Came from a northern school but definitely not yours because they were not top 3. She graduated and stayed active all 4 years, but never really made any friends in the arizona chapter. They do tend to get VERY cliquey within their pledge classes and it can be tough to make friends outside your clique in that house.

We do NOT haze here. Hazing is not a problem in sororities. Occasionally actives will get a little rowdy with new members and accidentally (or on purpose) pressure to them to drink. But intentional hazing does not happen here, despite what anyone on this site says.

Which "Northern school" are you transferring from, and why Arizona? Just wondering.

Not sure about Gamma Phi, but some sororities require a vote by chapter members to accept transfer students.

As for pledge classes being cliquey, it's always going to be harder for a transfer student to find their "group" in a house since they're joining a group where everyone has been together since pledging, etc. It will take time and a lot more effort by the transfer student.
