Every chapter has to take a certain number of sophomores and freshmen, at least at the earlier rounds. The result of this is essentially that you're only "competing" against other sophomores. (Sorry to use the word "competing," because that's not how I like to look at it, but that's kinda how the system works logistically.) Usually it's like maybe 15% of people going through recruitment are sophomores, but a ton of them drop out, and then about 20% of every pledge class is sophomores... so if you don't drop out, you have a better chance of making it to every round.
That said, your reputation among girls in the chapter will matter a lot more as a sophomore. That shouldn't scare you unless you're a huge drama queen or liability, in which case you probably won't end up in a chapter where a lot of girls know you... unless you're super hot and it's a chapter that only cares about looks, in which case you'll end up where you want to be.

Sorry, the end of my comment assumed that if you're hot you want to be in a chapter that only cares about looks. That was presumptuous and I apologize.
By the way, if you're going through recruitment as a sophomore, actives will expect you to have a more clear idea of WHY you're going through recruitment - whether it's because you're looking for a sisterhood, or a social scene, or a place to get involved. Be honest about that.
