There is no fall rush and you are at a definite disadvantage in getting a bid compared to freshmen.

The NU ifc page says ipperclassmencan can rush, get bids and pledge in the fall. Is that just bs that never really happens in real life with any 1/2 decent fraternity?

I've heard of fall rush in theory, but I've never seen any NU frat actually do it. Sophomores can get bids and I know of one fraternity in specific which has a pretty good number of transfers, but it is generally harder to get a bid as a sophomore.

Chapters don't care if you are a sophomore/transfer, including the 'top tier' houses. If you fit their personality and get to know people, then you should be fine.

You can get a bid as a sophmore, most pledge classes have sophmores in them. There just isn't a fall rush, which is where the confusion is. Rush is formally in the winter quarter, but you will be going to events in the fall with the fraternitiies that you're interested in

Regarding rush as a sophomore, there were a lot of great guys who decided not to rush freshman year. Just say that you decided not to rush freshman year because of gpa issues or something like that

Now that SAE is falling, will they give me a bid for spring rush?

I don't think that's recommended, you should rush elsewhere unless SAE's reputation improves

Very conflicting info in these responses. What's the real deal with this?

The reason there is some conflicting info is that there isn't "officially" fall rush, since everyone gives out their bids in the winter quarter. But most of the rushing goes on in the fall and is open to sophmore transfers. You will meet plenty of fraternity guys at sunday night dinners and get invited to rush events despite being a sophmore. It may be harder to get a bid from the top frats since they don't give out a lot of sophmore bids and it'll be harder since you won't know anyone in the frat going in, but certainly doable at mid tier fraternities.
