question about frats
by: freshmanHow different is your social life if you aren't in a frat compared to fall quarter? Will you no longer be able to attend any parties, even if you have friends in other frats? Is it fairly easy to rush as a sophomore?

You will have virtually no social life with Greek orgs in the winter and far less in the spring if you don't join. If you are close friends with guys in fraternities, you will be able to attend open events, but it'll be a lot less than what you've gotten used to during rush. If you want to rush a top or middle tier fraternity, rush is significantly harder as a sophomore.

In winter quarter there's a lot less open parties as frats are no longer focussed on recruitment and more on having mixers (a frat and a sorority will pair up) and stuff like date nights and formals. That being said there be a few open parties, but they won't be as common and even then they are more "need a text open". That being said, there will be parties hosted off campus by groups, and people such as ISA and due to the cold dorm drinking becomes a lot more common as people don't want to head out in the cold cold weather. Upperclassmen will head to places like Nevin's and Lincoln Park/Chicago bars.
This being said there are plenty of reasons to join a fraternity, parties being only one. However I would highly recommend if you want to do so, to head out today (thursday) as most if not all places are invite only for tomorrow (friday). Check the IFC Facebook page for a list of events.
