recruitment advice from someone who's been through

by:

While it's probably best to stay off of Greek Rank when you're about to go through recruitment, I know that nerves can motivate us to research and prepare ourselves in any way we can. I hope that for those of you on this site, this advice will stick with you when you're making decisions during recruitment. Hopefully, it'll help you feel a little more confident and give you an idea of what you want to get out of your future sorority life.

When you're a freshman, it's easy to get caught up in social status because you're trying to make friends a find a place on campus where you belong. While we like to say that we're above that, we unconsciously still consider "rankings" because we don't have much else to go off of when forming opinions. I know I definitely did. And that's 100% natural and okay. However, it's important to know that regardless of what sorority you end up in, you'll gradually start to see that the superficial criteria people rank sororities on matters very little. Yes, tiers do have some influence into which sororities mix with which fraternities. But after your sophomore year, you won't really go to mixers all that often. What you will continue to engage in is all of the other amazing opportunities your sorority has to offer, like giving back to the community through philanthropy, growing as a leader, laughing your ass off at sisterhood events, and of course, all of the awesome life-long friendships you'll make. So, I encourage you to focus on long-term goals and ask yourself questions like:
-which girls will help me figure out who I want to be?
-which girls would I want to have drunken heart-to-hearts with over pizza at 2 am?
-who will be there for me when I'm at my lowest?
-where will I be challenged and encouraged to be the best possible version of myself?

It's totally okay to think about how being in a sorority will impact your social life. All sororities will offer you tons of social opportunities. While I do enjoy those, what I really value about my sorority is how much these girls have helped me grow over the past few years. Not only are they the ones I was able to open up to and be real with during recruitment, but they're also the ones who have been there for me ever since. I really hope that all of you to have the same amazing experience that I had over the next four years, so I highly encourage you to think about what you want and value and how being in a sorority will reinforce those things.

Bump!! The reasons why I wanted to join a sorority as a freshman are a ton different than why I'm still in my sorority now. Yes, when I was a freshman I was concerned about the social stuff, but now that I'm an upperclassman it's really the friends I've made and the support I've had that have made me continue to come back to my sorority.

I think if I had joined a more social sorority yeah it would've been more fun at first but I don't think I would've been as happy my junior and senior year. (not to say that you shouldn't join a more social sorority if you want to be happy, but if your personality doesn't mesh well with them you definitely shouldn't).
