Honestly my best advice for freshmen fall quarter is to
1. chill about the sorority stuff, the less you worry about it the better, but really
2. if you want to get to know the personality of a sorority without going up to them and annoying them when you see them out, keep up with their social media. Its something that you can keep tabs on (if you want to) that will give you sense of each sororities vibe. Most of the sororities update them very regularly, and it'll give you a chance to see what kind of girls each sorority has based on the stuff they post AND you can se the faces of the girls in each chapter so when you do see them around or in your classes, you can get to know them (or not which girls not to make a drunk mess of yourself in front of)
My suggestion that I think is the most fun to keep up with is the tumblrs.

A lot of the tumblrs are a bunch of girls modeling for the camera, showing off their fancy vacations, and are pretty superficial. Tumblrs don't say anything about a house.
Let's be realistic. People need to just wait for recruitment, because girls here have literally no say in who they want until pref night. If you're not partying, in clubs with actives, etc., you can slip through the cracks, unless you happen to be a girl they really like during recruitment. I'm in a middle tier house, and even we know who we want to aim for before recruitment starts.
Another thing that people weren't honest about is the competition of recruitment. A bunch of girls sign up for recruitment, and half of them drop because they don't get invited back to the houses they want. If everyone stayed, pledge classes would be twice the size they are now.

you'd be surprised how many girls drop if they don't have even the middle tier left our rush process kind of sucks because we have such a huge gap between tiers in terms of social life quality and prestige, which is what a lot of these girls want (I mean we go to northwestern, people here want something shiny and nice on the outside) it sucks but it's true
