spirit groups: spikes vs wrangers?

by: newKid

I just wanted to follow up on my earlier post here where people recommended that I look into spikes or wranglers. Can someone tell me more about the quality of guys in both, who they mix with, social life etc? Also I'll take any other recommendations on spirit groups out there. The ones I know of are these two and Tejas, but if there are others that are also good do let me know. Thanks again for the help

Tejas - more like a traditional frat

Wranglers - more athletically focused

Spikes - balance of athletics and frattiness

Simple as that

I really don't know anyone in Iron Spikes so I can only vouch for Wranglers on quality of guys, social life, etc. The guys I know in Wranglers are well-rounded athletic dudes who didn't rush a fraternity for one reason or another. Very similar to fraternities except that dues are cheaper and they have far less events but still have bar tabs, parties, etc. Mix mostly with spirit groups but also have some relations with bottom-midtier sororities, much more so than spikes. They are a bit older than spikes but from my experience, spikes is probably preppier in their appearance. Ultimately though, go to both of their recruitment events, talk to some guys and decide for yourself.

Anyone have more info on Iron Spikes?

Idk anything about iron spikes. Wranglers have a pretty strict workout thing they do so if you're not into that fitness stuff you won't like them. Actually they're like fitness freaks so people just consider them douche heads. If you're looking for a spirit group go with Tejas hands down. They're the closest thing to a frat and have a nice house and history at UT. Honestly I would say Tejas is more respected that all of the bottom and the screw off middle tier feats. Obviously fraternities are a better option. But as spirit groups go Tejas is the best option. Kind of like a middle tier frat. With better quality members but no where near the social scene. Not even compared to some bottom tier frats.

any tejas member i've met in my four years here has been a creep. I'm in a fraternity but i would definitely chose wranglers over tejas

Yeah I've heard that too but Tejas seems like it takes forever to get into so I'm looking into spikes instead. I've heard they're pretty chill guys as compared to wranglers but mostly they seem off the radar. If anyone can tell me more about them specifically, that'd be great

A typical student club. Not obsessed with athletics like wranglers. Not as prestigious (I'm isung that term loosely) as Tejas who is pretty much a frat without the social scene. Iron spikes is for students who want to be involved with UT not just their frat. They do a lot for the school. More than frats do. Fraternities do not respect them but the university for the most part does. No social life though. Not at all. But a better option than-I would say the bottom half of fraternities- who are littered with bad apples and TFM wanna be's. However it depends on what you're looking for. If it's a frat then join one cause spirit groups are no where near the same. If you're looking to surround yourself with quality guys who for one reason or another just didn't want to join a frat then there you go. Spirit groups are brotherhood student orgs. Again they are NOT a frat. And people mistake that cause they look similar on the surface. Very strict rules as well that unlike frats they must Follow. It's a student org not a frat remember that.

I thought they mix with a bunch of spirit groups and all like sweethearts and lassos...I do understand that lower dues means less events/no house, but are they not socially active at all?

I'm looking for mostly a casual social scene like apartment parties/mixers and a few bartabs/tailgates mixed in. I was hoping that groups like spikes or wranglers would be good for this since I've seen their tailgates but I guess not. The only reason I can't join a frat is because I don't have the financials yet and it'll be too late for me next year academically

I understand the financial part completely. However, Greek life at UT, you get what you pay for. Iron spikes do have a social life and do mixers with some sororities and other spirit groups as well. However the social scene is only about like 5% what they're about. And iron spikes champion themselves to be a service group rather than a social one. Their community serves hours you have to complete each semester is pretty difficult and gets in the way of being a typical college kid. And they have a STRICT conduct policy. i understand wanting a casual social scene, however, College is way different that HS. With the exception of Tech, UT has a social scene that's second to none in the state. But spirit groups are like a single A baseball team being compared to the major leagues. It's both professional but everyone wants to be in the big leagues. If you want to join IS you do so knowing you're doing mostly service things as opposed to social life. I do agree above that spirit groups do have much better guys than in some frats because to be an iron spike it takes commitment which is respected by UT as opposed to some bottom tier frats that are just guys trying to be what they see in Tfm and old row. I understand coming to UT and wanting to change the world but you only have 4 years here and you need to have as much fun as you can. Look into fraternities and see if you can afford them because it's an experience that you can never have again. And no disrespect to..

Spirit groups but I wouldn't consider it a once in a lifetime experience. I just wouldn't. Maybe I'm wrong though and I think I may be a little. But being a Greek here is too amazing. I just don't want to spend my college days supporting the baseball team and doing non stop community service. When I could be chilling with my brothers and sorority girls. And another thing is that a lot of people don't even know what iron spikes are. A lot of people think they're just die hard baseball fans. If you want to be an iron spike then be one. Look at their alumni... It's safe to say to pretty impressive people were once spikes. Just remember though you get what you pay for.

Ok great, thanks for the input man. The only thing is I'm not sure if I can join a fraternity since I rushed a bunch of places and either refused bids or didn't show up enough to get a bid (Just went for rush parties, didn't have the $$$ to join). I've kinda been everywhere so I feel like rush captains already know me in a bad light. Do you think it's worth trying to hit up those places again? I'm also unsure if I can afford it this semester and next semester I'll be taking extremely difficult classes. That's kind of why I wanted to look into spikes. With that, do you think spikes is still an option or should I wait to contact some rush captains? I had a bid at a few places but I feel like the guys were let down that I didn't join

Spirit groups and fraternities are not the same thing. Spirit groups are like a student organization. But definitely better than an org but not a fraternity. Someone told me that iron spikes is like nothing but pledging. All you do is work for a little social life. Buuuuuut iron spikes are very respected to the students who understand them. I would say be as involved as you can. If that's a fraternity or iron spikes. Just get involved and hook em

@newKid in the same situation as you man, I'm looking into iron spikes as well. Would love more info on them socially if anyone has some input. Thanks

@broski

Iron spikes don't have much of a social life that's why no one on here can say anything specific other than tail gates with virtually no hot girls. Iron spikes are NOT a social club they are a service organization that every now and then have a social.

You join iron spikes to work not play. They are a very respectable organization but do not join with the expectations of them providing a social life. You will have to play your own cards when it comes to your social life. Because iron spikes do not worry about that stuff. They worry about working with their charities and school service. Not socials. But they do have them it's just when you're dues are like 500 you're not going to be able to do much with that.

Let me post an update on this since the rank of spirit groups at UT has changed a lot over the last two years. Here is my rank for male spirit groups.
1 (tie)- Texas Iron Spikes & Wranglers
Both are premier almost “Greek frat” organizations. Spikes is more baseball and fratty like, whereas tejas is more BHP majors and sticks to themselves. Both have a lot of clout but tejas isn’t more of a traditional spirit group, whereas spikes likes to mix with sororities and get a more greekish involved. Both are still true service orgs and do a lot of good things for the UT community. You just have to choose which fits you more.
2- Wranglers
Think about spikes but less clout.
