If you can get into one of the top spirit groups, I'd say it's a better investment. It looks like they have plenty of social events, they do round up, TONS of campus involvement (more so than bottom tier sororities), and it's much cheaper than joining a sorority. I would definitely going through formal first though.

Even the Japanese street fashion club is better than sdt.

Do not look up what that club is btw

Has problems getting mixers even with bottom tier fraternities. They also don't have major philanthropy events in lieu of dessert with dg. Any spirit group would be better, unless you really love acacia.

When are they finally going to close? No social life. No philanthropy. No members. No house. No respect. Time to move on and let someone else have a chance.

they may not be like the other chapters but they have a nice group of girls who will get a sorority experience. With encouragement, they will grow and get a house.

You can try to tell yourselves that you're getting a sorority experience, but everyone else knows that is laughable. You've had a million chances to succeed but keep getting worse. Time to step aside and let someone else succeed.

They have to close for a new sorority to colonize? On the other hand, if they did close, do you seriously think an NPC sorority with any sense would touch this campus with a 10-foot pole?

word is is that UT's greek culture is toxic...not supportive of one another, which I don't like. I do think there is support except for the bottom tier houses, which get a lot of grief (and aren't as bad as the top/middle tiers make them out to be).

On the other hand, UT greeks comprise a small group within a huge student population, which makes the NPC/IFC chapters elite and exclusive...just how we like it.

no npc sorority is going to come here with a failing sorority like sdt still here. they need to get out of the way so someone strong can come on

The numbers just aren't there to justify bringing on a new sorority. You'll never see pledge classes of 170 or even 100 here.

so right....this aint Bama, where a big chunk of the whole univeristy is greek....not very special that way. Like @sup....so true....UT NPC Greek like isn't for just anyone or everyone. As long as the houses are full and quota is made.

By: hey
by: Hmm

Well quota isn't being made by SDT and their persistence in being in recruitment is making everyone hate them instead of just feeling sorry for them. They will never be anywhere near total and I think they should move on and let a strong national sorority who could actually be competitive come in.

sdt doesn't choose to do recruitment. they're NPC so they have to or otherwise they get shut down. unless most of their sisters went inactive all at once that would never happen and for all their issues sdt has a tight sisterhood and their members for some reason stick with their sorority through thick and thin

by: Right...

Because their nationals can't take different approaches to different campuses. Bama =/= UT. Recruitment is super expensive, these girls couldn't afford it without nationals at least helping with some of the costs. It's also a hell of a lot of work for an under quota chapter (which nationals also directs help from across the country to come in). Doubt those girls are doing it on their own accord "just 'cause they really want to participate." Nationals orders are nationals orders no matter what sorority you're in.

by: Well...

They keep getting the same bad result. It's hard to understand what their nationals' reasoning would be. They don't get more than a couple of new members and every other sorority gets madder and madder at them. How horrible they would keep putting them in this position when they don't make some of their other school chapters do it.

So they would rather make it worse and worse and worse rather than let it do things that will help it survive? It makes no sense!

Well that's so strange that they'd make them do formal here then. It makes no sense!

The main reason this chapter is under pressure to do formal is that a few years ago SDT national invested quite a bit of time and money to come to campus and help with recruitment and boost their numbers. They want to see a return on their investment.

We have a winner. A few years ago (2011?) their nationals came in and spent a large amount of time, effort, and money to start a movement to get the chapter back into formal. At first SDT was only a stop during recruitment where the nationals team gave refreshments and a speech. The next year they "participated" in only the open house round, and after that they started doing full on formal. So they've only fully participated at most three times now.

That's exactly what happened. I can almost guarantee the current actives are not the ones responsible for their participation in formal recruitment.
