Forgive me, I've yet to visit UT but it's at the top of my list.
Can someone explain what Hardin House and Scottish Rite are? Why are they so popular, they don't seem particularly "luxurious" .
Do most freshmen live off campus? What are campus dorms like?

Hardin and SRD are popular because of tradition, SRD is actually pretty nice but the rooms are small. Almost everyone who lives at Hardin rushes while there is a less percentage at SRD. I would say most freshman live on campus or in off campus dorms like those or callaway. San Jac/Duren are the nicest and newest dorms.

Hardin and to an extent SRD look old and decorated like my grandmother's house, true. But they have that "homey" old style that's supposed to be reminiscent of the girls' "old money" homes. Go to Zillow and look at the dreadfully tacky and dated interior of homes in Highland Park and River Oaks/Memorial and you'll understand. I find that the inside of Hardin reminds me a lot of camp too, and a lot of PKT girls are still living in the past, trying to relive their camp days and stick with the same crowd of girls, so they all live in the same place. Oh well.
I lived in Callaway my freshman year, and it was great. There was an even mix of guys and girls, and a decent number of Greeks.
Living in Towers or Castillian can be one of the worst choices if you're a girl. Lots of guys live there, but they live there to party. It's like Spring Break there every weekend. Don't be a Tower Rat. I leave it up to you to figure out the reputation of girls who decide to live there...
