I will be attending UT next Fall. It's the only school my family wants me to go to so I will make the best of it. I am currently a student at a prestigious Dallas school and from an old money family. Even though I have the right credentials to join a top sorority I am not very comfortable in social situations. I have only 2 best friends and am pretty quiet towards others which always gets misinterpreted for snobbiness. I'm okay with being different from other girls but my family still tries to change me.
Anyway...my mother, grandmother and every other family member expect me to join a sorority. You can guess which ones are acceptable. I know on my own merits that no house would take me. I've told my parents this but they think they can make a 'donation' to get me in. Is this true? In some ways I'm hoping it's not so I don't have to join one even though I guess I'll have to go through rush to appease them.

Let the chips fall where they may. You will likely get a bid from one of the top sororities, as money, feeder school, etc are important to them. But...if by some chance you don't, no problem for you. UT is a great place to go to school....you will find "your" group either way...it sounds harder to deal with your own family.

If your parents think joining a top chapter is going to save you from the company of peasants like me, they're kidding themselves. It isn't 1980 anymore and at this point, we've more often gone based on who we like. Yes we get girls from a lot of the same schools, but it's socioeconomically diverse. It's up to you. If they force you to go through, you'll get to meet people. You have an opportunity to change your mind. I'm sorry they're pressuring you so much :(

I agree. You may find that college is easier to socialize with others than high school. UT is pretty laid back and very accepting. Good luck!
