for once kappa finally took the good sophomores.

by: yay

So funny how they get a great PC, but their sophomores have been such a bust every year until now. I'm proud of them. Good work with PC'15.

can you explain 'bust'? Also, do UT chapters have to fill the sophomore quota or is it optional? If it's optional, why is it called a quota?

If upperclassman quota is optional
But since it includes juniors most sororities will take them to fill holes from dropouts.
But not enough juniors are going through, so they take some sophomores
If they don't take the full quota they fall behind in size. And it would appear as if they didn't make quota.
If they fall behind in size total wouldn't keep going up.
Really to not take them is pointless as long as they are girls you want in your chapter.

I would think freshman quota and upperclassman quota are figured separately right?
It's almost like s whole separate rush for upperclassmen?

sorry to keep asking for clarifiction....

.....so the non freshman quota is optional....but if a chapter chooses to take it, they have to fill it all? Is that why it's called a quota??

Ok, so this year, quota (the number of girls each sorority can take in a PC) was 48 for freshman and 13 for upperclassmen, for a total of 61. Some groups got more than that bc of QAs (girls who wouldn't have matched normally but were rewarded for maximizing their options and listing every chapter they preffed). So, while every house elected to bid at least 48 freshman girls, and they had the OPTION to bid up to 13 upperclassmen girls, some groups chose NOT to take 13 upperclassmen (they only pledged the ones they really wanted). Basically, if sororities choose to intentionally not take the full freshman quota, Nationals are going to want a damn good reason as to why, but since upperclassmen quota is OPTIONAL, they do not have to take all 13 upperclassmen to be considered as making quota. Upperclass quota was designed to give upperclassmen a better chance of receiving a bid, and it does help, but no group is required to bid that #; its up to the individual chapters to decide how many upperclassmen they want to take.

I just don't get the 'quota' part. A 'quota' means you have to hit certain numbers....but an optional quota I don't understand. I know someone discerning a sophomore run since she dropped out midstream not liking her options...that's why I ask. If she tries again for a top house, if there is quota (as I understand the word), then she has a chance since the chapter has to take the # of girls dictated by the quota. If no quota, then she won't risk top house rejection again, especially going up against all the freshman. Does this make sense?

OK....I figured it out....the soph/upper classmen quota is the max they can take....so, they can take fewer or none....got it. So....this is bad news for someone who wants to rerush as a sophomore....right?

No, because most take a good number of sophomores.

But Tri Delt got the not so bright sophomores.

So....the top houses prioritized sophomore girls who prolly had the 'right' connections/backgrounds but not the grades over a girl like the one I'm talking about, who had the looks, excellent grades/extra curriculars at a rigorous, big city private school, the ability to afford sorority life, but lacked the connections/affluent background & home zip/'brand name' feeder school and had a hispanic last name??

This sounds like it was rehashed and repackaged from one of those earlier threads from rush
Like that PNM Mom or whatever talking about how her daughter got dropped but she was so special

The pic of kappas new members on Facebook is only about 50 faces. I just looked at it.

So every sorority doesn't take their allotted upperclassmen???
That seems like a waste.....

From what it seems, she either dropped or got cut and didn't end up in a "high enough" house and is now latching onto the prospect of ending up in a "PKT" sorority as a sophomore.

@Hmmmm: yes...there is a lot of that going around with UT rush, year after year.
@UT: You bet. She may have been 'unconnected' but she has her standards and wasn't going to pledge any ol' house just to be greek. If PKT needs to upgrade their sophs after taking some cut-rate girls just to fill up (especially if it's 'random' at times), why wouldn't a really nice, quality girl target them? So....yeah...I've got just the girl for them.
@example: appreciate the scoop....it sounds like this particular girl might actually do better rushing as a soph versus a freshman.

Let's be clear. Theta and Pi Phi take amazing sophomores. So does ChiO in the rarer event they take sophomores. Nice quality girls do target Kappa, but for whatever reason Kappa wasn't paying any attention or background checking in 2013 and 2014. Some cig-loving reputation risks weaseled their way into sophomore quota.
