Say there's a big group of sophomores/juniors in "ABC" sorority from "ZHS"
The soph/jr ring leader(s) that are active in ABC from ZHS dislikes the girls from ZHS that are coming through. She lobbies that ABC does not take any of the freshman from ZHS. They all go to other sororities thus weakening ABCs hold on that high school perhaps forever. Or they all go to a rival sorority thus shifting the power to recruit stellar ZHS pledges from ABC to XYZ sorority.

The alums from ABC tell the active ABC chapter they have to take the freshmen from ZHS just because they are what is expected. Even if the soph/jr don't want them. Then the chapter divides along class lines. Factions run different candidates for the major offices. Some dark horse wins president. More and more cracks form

There has been so much stuff on here about the Open House dance parties, but no one has mentioned the Pref Night double-crosses and other hijinks. Hard to believe that the "PKT" triumvirate would ever fall off the top at UT, but if Theta is considered bottom tier at Bama, I guess anything could happen.
