dropping and rerushing

by: Dropper

How hard is it to get into a sorority, not necessarily top tier, if you dropped recruitment as a freshman and rush again as a sophomore? Is it easier if you dropped earlier in recruitment?

your best chance is as a freshman.why do you think sororities who cut you as a freshman would want you as a less desirable sophomore?stay in. make it work with what you have left.it's your best shot at being greek at all.

Your best chance is NOW. Many houses have a "once cut, always cut" rule. You need to be very honest and realistic with yourself about why you didn't have a great rush this year and your chances of improving those things for your sophomore year:
1. Did you not get recs or strong recs? If so, HOW are you going to develop relationships with alumnae this year?

2. Were you a grade risk? UT is hard, especially for some of the small town kids who would never have been top 7% at a strong urban high school. HOW are you going to ensure you get a 3.5-4.0 range GPA this year?

3. Did you not have in-house connections at enough houses? If not, HOW are you going to build those friendships this year? Especially as the freshmen girls will be really wrapped up in their new sorority life?

4. Did you not have a strong resume? If so, HOW are you going to get involved on campus and earn leadership roles? Do you know what the revered organizations on campus are? You can't just join the French club and think you're a shoo-in sophomore year.

5. How is your personality compared to the houses you wanted? If you just plain don't fit or were seen as awkward, it's REALLY hard to overcome that "ding" against you.

Bottom line, yes, some girls go through a second time with better results but you have to put on a FLAWLESS freshman year to do so....and not that many girls can pull it off.

This was why I waited until sophomore year to rush. Girl above said it best. You need a flawless freshman year.

It's no big deal to drop. Just make sure you can get a summer job working at camp (Waldemar, Longhorn etc...) and those connections will get you into any house you want, even as a sophomore.

That tactic makes her look like a major try hard. Can't recommend it.

I do believe the poster was joking about getting a camp job....

You are right, just didn't want some overly emotional former pnm to read it and go apply for camo jobs this summer.
Some of these girls take GR very literally.

I dropped my freshman year and then re-rushed as a sophomore. I dropped because I didn't understand how intense/stressful recruitment would be, got freaked out by the songs/doorstacks, and wasn't entirely sure I wanted to be greek. My freshman year I maintained a high GPA (above 3.8), got involved in leadership positions in student gov., and lost 30 pounds. Re-rushed open to any house that was willing to give me a chance. I did "well" and got to join the house of my choice. It's possible.

To be a freshman and to get involved in SG and drop 30 lbs and maintain a great GPA... That sounds hard. And you probably made friends across campus in different orgs and decided even then you still has a desire to be Greek. Good for you

Thanks. Advice for any girls who are looking to go this route is to forget about Greek Life for the year. Find out what you are interested in and get involved on campus. Find friends, greek or not, and settle into collegiate life. Don't do things your freshman year because you think they will help you get into a house later. Set yourself up for a happy life without being Greek and your involvement and well-roundedness with play to your favor if you choose to re-rush.

Out of curiosity, which specific sororities auto-cut people who rush again as sophomores, as a rule?

Most of them, unless they struggle with numbers (so, ~2 chapters on this campus right now). My chapter has a strict policy about this, and while I obviously don't know every chapter's membership rules, I have heard that most have a general "once you're cut, you're always cut" rule (unless maybe you were cut only because of grades, then you pull a 3.8 freshman year).

Honestly, it's one thing to drop out during rush and try again as a sophomore as long as you're realistic as other posters have said, but I find it tacky if a girl gets a bid from a sorority, drops the sorority, then rushes again as a sophomore. I'm sure some girls have had positive outcomes, but that seems rare.
