why do southern sororities prefer southern girls?

I'm not trying to be hateful at all! But why are southern sororities so persistent on girls from certain areas/not as keen on girls from certain states (such as California), even if they have the same (or better) credentials?
Again, not hating, just wondering. I'm not originally from the South :)
