why the torture?

What I want to know is why do they participate in formal? Do they want to or are they forced to? My opinion would be drastically different if they chose to do formal or if they're forced into it.
I'm in no way advocating being rude or downright mean to SDT when you get to their house!

If that's true, it's odd that the Bama chapter hasn't done formal in close to a decade.
