northeast

I'm going through recruitment this fall and I'm from the North East and I've got all the recs and everything else. My one question from reading on here is would "affluent southern" be the same as affluent in my part of the country?

Judging by your situation you're better off if you have some kind of Texas connection (a good one), are a sophomore, or know the girls already, honestly. To do really, really well that is. Do you mean "affluent southern" as in types of people we take? There are girls from all across the board who rush and houses that take them, but "affluent southern" or whatever applies more to 3 specific houses that know those areas well. People aren't as familiar with good areas in the northeast unless it's like greenwich, the upper east side or something common knowledge like that. Unfortunately that doesn't always do out of state girls from prominent backgrounds any favors. Sometimes incredibly random girls from god knows where end up being taken because some supersnob in the chapter thought they looked the part or have some old texas family last name, even if it's a coincidence.

Texas connection, rec letters or LOS in early, good photos-- For the love of God, I hope you haven’t worn any chevron or over-styled your hair or done black eyeliner, but it’s whatever floats your boat. I doubt you’re one to overdo it if you’re coming from the northeast.

Good luck. If you stand out and people like you, you’ll definitely be given the benefit of the doubt.

If you went to Choate, Exeter, Hotchkiss or something similar, you probably would not have any issues.

Looks like someone got their info from Forbes and a brief Google search on New England. Don't worry, it's just ignorance. "Hotchkiss, Exeter, or Choate" lol why and how the eff would those kids end up at Texas? Good lord, let me spend 70,000 dollars a year and board just to end up at a state school with no connections or ties to those ppl...really lmfao

There's plenty of kids that go to top private schools and end up in top programs at UT like BHP and Petroleum Engineering on a scholarship. And it's definitely not 70K/year.

UT has like one of those girls a year. Don't be silly.

I'm originally from New England so I found this whole section on boarding schools interesting. Literally...I know wtf I'm talking about when I say I'm familiar with boarding school culture. I have cousins at Deerfield, Loomis, and Choate. Here's the deal: people who go there don't apply to Texas. They just don't. 'Hahaha' explained it well.

Now where did you go, TX? Tell us :)

Chances are, a lot of girls from PKT will be well-traveled, even if they are born and raised in Texas, and will be familiar with cities in the Northeast. For example, I did JSA summer school at Georgetown in Washington DC and met people from all over the Northeast, and I did Summer language programs in Spain and France and met others from the Northeast. We may be from Texas, but we're not ignorant.

I generally agree that there is not a strong pull from these named schools. However, there are kids that go to these schools from Texas and come back for college. I had 2 guys from Andover in my fraternity back in the 90's. There were 3 girls from Choate and another from Hotchkiss when I was in school (2 Pi Phis, 1 Kappa and 1 Theta).
