sorority recruitment

by: Nikki

I am a trans woman from out of state who will be rushing. Although you'd never guess I was born a man and I am truly a woman inside and out, I would really like to end up in a sorority that is very trans friendly. Someone told me there's at least one transgendered sister in KD. How do I bring this up during recruitment? Can I find a way to talk to her personally?

Isn't that what SDT is for? The sorority equivalent to the Land of Misfit Toys?

Gender identity is not something to joke around about. I'm surprised someone so ignorant even got into Texas. Get a life and stop being so cruel.

Look it up! A group of girls (who knows what they are?) started a sorority so they could all fit in.

You're probably better off at Reed College than here. This isn't the most open-minded place, it's Texas. I mean the school is somewhat "progressive," but the demographic of people in greek life isn't. And even to you, I would not recommend SDT. Not to anyone lol

This site is full of hateful close minded people who are not representative of the sorority life at all. That being said, greek life tends to be more conservative, and some national organizations might not permit them to pledge a transgendered woman. I would really think about what you want and maybe go through rush and ask yourself if there ... You could also talk to the leadership and ethics people at ut...they May have someone who can counsel you about whether or not to rush out of their Allies department. There is a non-panhellenic sorority at ut though that was founded with individuals like you in mind (it was in the daily texan) so you may want to Check that out too. You should know, though, that even if you got a bid, it could be challenging to feel like you belonged in the sorority as there wi likely be girls who will not understand or approve of you--I say that not out of hate but to let you know about a very real possibility

A couple of years ago, a woman at Mizzou who identifies as "genderqueer" (androgynous but leaning male in presentation) was not only president of her NPC chapter but president of Panhellenic.

i would not have my heart set on joining a sorority if i were you. for all practical purposes, greek life at UT is just as conservative as other big southern schools. Even if you got a bid, you would probably always feel like an outsider looking in, and if a sorority didnt know you were trans when they bid you, they will probably kick you out if/when they do.... it might not even be their choice but something that their national HQ has them do.

spirit groups give a similar experience but are typically more open minded about bidding non-traditional sorority girls (non stereotypical) and honestly are more likely to not only invite you into their membership but to truly appreciate what makes you truly you. i would look into Spirits and Sweethearts and Lassos and Lone stars at orientation, those are the best spirit groups, though Blue bonnets is growing quickly as is Texas Royals. Dues are also a lot bc you arent paying for the house. They still do lots of fun activities and date events too! they usually start thier rush the first few weeks of school

You may be in luck, because there are some real idiots in our greek system who probably wouldn't be able to tell that you were originally a man. To do that, however, you would need to really play up being a classic girl of good breeding in the way that you dress. How old are you?

Who ever started this link should be ashamed. Don't you think life is hard enough for people.

I really don't believe this post. It's just another way to smear a good sororities name. Trans gender it's your business and your business alone. There are no known Trans gender girls in texas greek system. That will have to start in a place like california before texas can consider it if ever. Sorry

Seems to me you're the one who's transphobic if you think having a trans member means a sorority is smeared. I hope she finds true happiness and sisterhood in KD or wherever she ends up!
