big 6
by: TruthHere is the best analogy I can come up with. At UT, Big 6 is like the Ivy League. Tradition keeps them where they are, and no matter who they pledge they will never stop being Big 6. A sorority can't move up and become Big Six, any more than a university can become Ivy. HOWEVER, Duke, MIT, Stanford, Rice, Notre Dame, Purdue, Northwestern...well they all do perfectly fine without being Ivy. People want them. People are not sad when they go there...they are thrilled. Sure, some people are sad because all their lives they have wanted Ivy and they don't get in, but many times they can be happy elsewhere. AND, this is the big part many don't get...some people never wanted IVY...ever. They chose to go to the other schools. Same here. Yes some girls would DIE if they didn't get PKT, much less Big 6. However, lots of girls really don't care and some never even care to shoot for Big 6. To me Tiers and Big 6 are too separate entities. Big 6 is like Old Row, First Circle, Three Queens, whatever other schools have. It won't change. Tiers can change. Sometimes Pi Phi really doesn't deserve their top ranking, sometimes they do. Same for the others. Sometimes AXO or APhi or DG could rank around 5 or 6...but no one will acknowledge this. But, it doesn't matter. If you are happy, who cares where your group ranks. We are beyond blessed to have 10-12 strong groups. Peace.

And let me add, I have great respect for all the Big 6 and other sororities. It just seems like, if you just look on GR, the other sororities don't matter. And they do. Our Greek system is great and tradition is wonderful, but it doesn't have to be designed to make non Big 6 girls feel they are missing something. They aren't.
