Is UT austin as competive as it seem?

Hey guys so i am an international student wanting to go to ut,i really like ut's greek like(at least from the outside) but from what everyone is talking about is it pretty difficult to be given the time of day by chapters if you are not connected.Is that truly the case?Do i even have a chance if i do not know anyone?
