rush 2014
by: Out of stateWhat are the chances for out of state students for rush next fall? I'm a legacy at Kappa, but I heard that doesn't matter. I used to live in Dallas and moved young. My family is entirely from Texas and helped me gather all my credentials thoroughly for pi phi and kappa as my cousins are all alums. I'm basically involved in every single community service org / project at my school have good sat scores great grades and am in an honors program. Not sure how I'll make out or what to really expect.... Looking for advice

Also I have recs for all the sororities but for kappa pi phi I have a letter of rec and three letters of support. Some of the others I have two letters and some I have one. I'm not really sure what to expect, and although my cousins combed over my kappa pi phi packets and sent them in before May 1, I'm not sure whether to get invested because I feel like as an OOS I might / probably will get cut and upset

Go through Recruitment. The sororities you mentioned are awesome, but all offer social aspects and sisterhood. No one is going to give you the stink eye if you walk around in a DG, APhi, AXO, ETC shirt. Are these groups Big 6...no.But they are good. So are KD, ADPi, and AZD is climbing up and would be mid tier at most other schools. Just give it a rest and meet the girls. PNMs like you are annoying.

I get where you're coming from. You're right -- don't get too invested into any sorority. There are many great chapters that offer what all the others do. Go in with an open mind and try to enjoy rush.
To answer your question though, I'm not sure what being an out of stater impacts in regards to your chances at rush

I'm by no means elitist and am trying to go in very open minded because I do not know much about UT Greek life. I guess my question is more how I can get prepared. I just want to get into a house, like everyone else that rushes, that will have sisterhood and comradery as well as a decent social life. My concern that I was trying to express before was more about feeling that I'm at a disadvantage being out of state because there aren't roundup or local panhellenic offices and I don't go to a high school that gets recruited obviously.

I am also out of state, but don't have connections at the big 6 - so will be focused on the mid-tier houses. I have all my recs in, or on the way. Best advice I heard is to not put all eggs in "big 6" basket. So, rank some mid-tiers higher so u don't get shut out completely. Good luck!
#8by: Its a fact
I understand not to focus on tiers, however it is a known fact that the "big 6" takes very few out of state girls. All it takes is looking at their websites - many of them list where their membership comes from. So, out of state girls should know that going in. Out of state girls are probably going to be drawn to the sororities that have a diverse group of girls anyway (and that don't put their bid list together based primarily on high school attendance and daddy's money). Oh, and advice I have received is from recent UT sorority alums, so I trust their judgement.

Went to UT freshman year, but didn't rush as an out of stater and sophomore year I decided to and I had 2 big six houses and 1 middle tier house on pref night. I'm in a chapter I love and I've met some amazing people. I'm still friends with my friends not in greek life. Out of state is a little factor in whether or not they really want you. You're going to have to shine in rush, but that's the case in state or out of state.

If you don't know people already in some houses, you are absolutely at a disadvantage. That's out of your control though, so stop wasting your time thinking about it. Focus on what you can control like the way you present yourself and your personality and conversation skills. Be open to ALL houses. They all offer something. Trust the system. And get off this site because it's not going to help your nerves and you're pretty much becoming one of those annoying girls.
