Advice to Incoming Freshmen Rushing
by: Yando
Rush at UT is extremely competitive. It's so important to go into recruitment being VERY open minded. Because rush is so competitive and everyone here is smart enough to get into UT, all of the sororities here are great and you will find amazing women in EVERY house. Be sure and manage expectations because unfortunately, not everyone who rushes at UT will get a house.
Ignore the ridiculous "ranking" posts on this site. Of course, rankings are 100% subjective and obviously, you wouldn't be helping yourself if you choose your sorority simply because someone on this site proclaims a certain sorority a "top" or "bottom" house.
This is college, not high school cliques. UT is extremely hard and four years is a long time, so really think about going into rush what you want/need in a sorority because your sisters will be your new support system. The "top" sorority house at UT is the one that fits YOU!
The truth is, each house here has a different flavor, differing priorities and differing vibes.
Do your research and talk to active greeks at UT to find out the vibe of each sorority and research each sorority before rush.

I agree with most everything OP said.
You would be ignorant to not realize where there is smoke there is fire. There are clearly some moms on here who are not on campus and cannot believe their princesses could do the things her sorority (mainly Theta let's be honest) is being called out on the carpet for.
These moms are NOT on campus witnessing the late nights and the bar tabs and the mixers like we all are - they are not on the same private stories that we are nor seeing the walks home from the frat houses and Calloway and the Limelights.
The very reason they are on greek rank chiding the comments shows they are still trying to spin the reality of on campus greek life and especially their daughters house. Maybe there should be some more open and honest conversations with your daughters this summer instead. They are not who you see on their public pages and GR is where the truths of their reputations and behaviors are exposed. It just is.
And it's NOT out of jealousy as no house has EVER had as many drop out as Theta did this last year. And to say it's not cliquey is laughable. The most miserable ones are the ones trying to hang on to their frenemies instead of actually finding their true people.
The truth hurts but its time you took the blinders off and see your daughter as the person she is. She might honestly need your help.
So if you are a mom reading this, please grow up and let your daughter decide for herself and stop trying to push your agenda. They know the behind the scenes way better than you ever will or your best friend at the country club does.

My advice to the freshies would be to do as you please but being in a cringe sorority is not easy. Boys make assumptions, girls make other assumptions but the outcome is the same. Color it whichever way you read it and you’ll be correct.
Choose some genuine and nice girls you have morals and interests in common with. Even if they are “ranked” lower, who cares. You’ll still go to the same parties but at least you won’t hate chapter and you’re in-house events.

The biggest issue at UT is that most of the sororities primarily recruit from their own big city Texas high schools. There are many houses that are dominated by 4-5 Texas high schools. The girls in these houses went to school with girls incoming and fight hard for them when voting. Several of these houses begin actively recruiting girls as early as junior year from these certain high schools- inviting girls up for weekends at the house. The smaller town & OOS girl who doesn't know anyone is already at a disadvantage before she walks in the door.
Another compounding issue is there are only 13 sororities at UT. Other large schools in size comparison have more houses-Alabama has 17 and UGA has 19- which adds to the increased competitiveness but it also means that most of the houses are great at UT because there are far more girls going through rush than available slots.
So long story short..
Bottom tiered houses are the houses filled with smaller town & OOS girls or girls not running in the right cliques in large Texas cities, who didn't stand much of a chance with a lot of the other houses. Bottom tier doesn't mean it's a quality of girl issue at UT or reputation. What's considered bottom at UT would most likely be a higher tiered at other schools not nearly as prestigious or hard as UT to get into (based on GPA, EC's, SAT's, class rank). Small town & OOS girls thrive at these houses as these houses are not dominated by tight high school friend groups, which can be challenging for an outsider.
My advice… Give all houses a fair chance and focus 100% on who you click with. If you don’t get a house, many girls are successful rushing again sophomore year when houses have a sophomore quota or during COB.

Some are just going out, putting out and passed out on the bathroom floor
