I think it’s maybe because big six, great eight and fine nine sound self important as if other sororities aren’t big, great or fine - and seven sisters sounds exclusive but not exclusionary 🥰

Ok, duh! the seven sisters was coined decades ago for seven elite private women's colleges located in New England and PA. Wellesley, Smith, Vassar, etc.
