Will I get a bid
by: 2021 pnmhey! I’m coming to ut for my sophomore year from Australia and wanting to rush, I have good grades, I was involved in clubs like debate and sports at high school, come from one of the best colleges in Australia and am pretty (relatively I guess like I have been told I am and I used to be a model) and come from a well off family (my dad is quite famous here). I’m also Christian and was a youth leader taking kids to conferences and events! I don’t have many connections (I know two girls not very well who are in sororities at ut) and don’t know if I’ll get a bid or what I can do to increase my chances!! please help 🥺 I don’t know how to get rec letters either

hey! so it's actually more chill of a rush experience for girls who rush soph year, and it's pretty normal to rush as a soph. good grades, clubs, coming from a good college, your dad being well-known etc are great but they don't really guarantee anything, especially if the people here aren't really familiar with Australia (I'm sure your college is amazing but people here will most likely not know about your college, or your dad, unless it's Liam Hemsworth. I don't want to be harsh but I wouldn't expect people here to recognize your school or your dad unless he is very famous because most people here are more accustomed to knowing about local schools. I just wouldn't bank on them knowing your dad or your college, however good/famous!!). for some sororities, it's a lot about if you're a legacy/if you're good friends with someone in a sorority. however, not all sororities are like that! i would definitely reach out to the girls you know and make connections with them and let them know you are going to rush. also, rec letters aren't as important as they seem to be (i know a bunch of girls with no recs who got bids!). it's very much a lottery process especially here since UT has one of the more hard, competitive rushes. however, rushing as a soph definitely has perks because fewer sophs rush & each sosority has a quota of sophs they need to have. definitely do not let any things hurt your feelings & enjoy the process! be yourself. things will work itself out!!
