Who are the historically relevant fraternities?
by: YesEvery few years fraternities move around in rankings depending on the quality of their pledge classes, getting/losing their house, scandals, etc. Who has historically been important, or at least relevant fraternities from the past 30-40 years? Like of course Fiji and SAE have been important in past years, but what about the others? ZBT wasn't always top right? Was Delt relevant when Mcconaughey was here? What about Ksig, Machi, KA?

Phi Delt - Was the first on campus and was a top through the mid-late 90's when they got kicked off.
ATO - Was a top from the beginning of time through when they got kicked off in late 80's.
Kappa Sig - Was a top until the early 80's. Had the best house UT has ever seen (south side of MLK at University up on a hill). Rivaled SEC houses.
Fiji - Founded same year as Phi Delt and always super strong.
SAE - Mid until the early 80's. Really have benefited from ATO and Phi Delt closures.
Deke - Was very strong through the 70's.

Beta was mid tier forever began to decline in the late 80s.came back in 2015 top of the bottom tier now.
Sigma Nu was upper mid tier until they got kicked off for hazing in the late 80s.
Believe it or not Lambda Chi was decent as well until they list their house after a fire.
DU was lower mid tier from the late 1950s through the mid 1980s they had a big house across from the KA’s they closed in 2000 and are top of the bottom now.
Some others like TKE have been on and off campus for a while but never got very strong.

KA was always strong, top tier at least from the ‘50s or ‘60s through late ‘90s or early 2000s when they got kicked off and took a slide operating on their own. Been working their way back since getting their letters back. We’re top 3 before, not quite back to that.
Phi Psi was strong upper mid/top tier from the ‘20s through the late ‘60s-early ‘70s when they fell hard like Deke. Got relevant again by early ‘80s and been up and down since but making a big move since their new house.
Sigma Chi has always been very solid upper mid with some top tier periods as well. Kicked off in 2000s for a few years and made a phenomenal comeback as a top 5-7 house. Will make more noise with new house.
Sig Ep was mid tier for many decades, then made a giant move in the early ‘80s with their house and been top 5 ever since.
Pike has always been a solid mid tier and should improve with their new house.

Taking a stab at last 30-40 years and before that. Tougher than I thought because some weren’t there the whole time or changed a lot during that time, so hard to place.
Last 30-40 years, no particular order in each group:
Fiji
SAE/KA
Sig Ep/Delt/ZBT
Sigma Chi/Kappa Sig/ATO/Pike/
Phi Psi/Sammy/Phi Delt/Sigma Nu/Beta
DU/Lambda Chi/Pi Kap/AEPi
The rest
Probably easier to split it up and rank for 80s-90s and 2000s forward.
Before 1980s - lots of movement over time so alphabetically in each group:
ATO
Fiji
Kappa Sig
Phi Delt
Beta
Deke
Delt
KA
Phi Psi
Pike
SAE
Sigma Chi
Sigma Nu
Sig Ep
ZBT
Acacia
AEPi
Chi Phi
Delta Sig
DU
Lambda Chi
Sammy
TKE?
Rest

In the 80s Phi Psi was mid tier right above Beta about equal to Sigma Nu. Sone what below Sigma Chi or Delt. Well below the top 6-7 fraternities based on selectivity and or sorority relations.
Here’s the real deal,You go Mid Tier if you are presentable and middle class .
Upper tier, Presentable and middle class won’t cut it you have to bring something more to the table . Either you have very good people skills and you are super sharp or athletic or If not you’d better from the leading areas of the large metro areas or from schools like Highland Park , Country Day, Alamo Heights , SMH , Memorial/ Strake etc. if you are from a small town you’d better be from one of the best families in your county,If you are presentable and middle class you go mid tier. Nothing wrong with mid tier it’s the truth. If you don’t know about Greek Life or are not as presentable you pledge a fraternity that’s trying to get stronger and break out of the bottom tier.

Here’s the tell mid tier fraternities mix with AXO , DG . and or Alpha Phi in a good year they might get a mixer with DDD or ZTA. Occasionally they will mix with ADPi or KD on the other end as well. There is nothing wrong with this at all.
The top tier mixes with the big six pretty much exclusively once in a while a lower top group like KA will do something with AXO DG or Alpha Phi. That’s usually later in the semester and the events aren’t as well attended.
The sorority girls know what they are after when they plan social events

Thanks, this is really interesting! Do you know about KA and Machi by any chance? How did ZBT get so big?
