Sophomore Transfer Rush

by:

Hi, I am coming into UT as a transfer this fall and I (along with some of my friends) am planning on rushing a sorority. I wanted to ask what to expect as far as rushing as a sophomore? I am a 3 generation legacy at one house & got LORs for every house (2 LORs for my legacy) but do not know how much those things matter. How large of a role does GPA play & what is considered a good GPA? Do some houses automatically cut transfers? Does being a legacy help with getting a bid? I'm very new to this process & wanted to get some insight before rush begins.
Also- please refrain from posting rankings or anything like that in the comments! I want to go in with an open mind and seriously consider all houses regardless of rank. As of right now, ALL of the houses seem like great options!

It’s good that you got letters of rec. Can’t speak for all houses, but for mine we require one to bid a girl. To be honest, I don’t think anyone actually reads them though, you just need to have them per national bylaws. Legacy status will help some, but some houses give more weight to it than others, and some don’t care at all. I believe DG, for example, is not taking legacy status into account in order to make rush fair and equitable for people like POC who historically have been excluded from the Greek system. At Texas, GPA is not a huge deal, as there’s an implicit assumption that if you’re smart enough to get accepted here, you’ll make your grades. Transfers are not automatically cut. In the sophomore pledge class my house just took, we had maybe 30% transfers? It really won’t hurt you save for the fact that you don’t know as many people necessarily as other sophomores, but you should be fine as here our freshman and sophomore quotas per pledge class are SEPERATE meaning sororities can take them and not worry you’re “taking” a spot from a freshman who would be here four years. You’re absolutely right that all the houses are great. I wish you the best of luck during rush! Be nice, dress appropriately, and be friendly and you’ll end up where you’re supposed to.

If your GPA is good enough to transfer in, then you shouldn't have to worry about that. Probably better than non-transfer sophomores tbh
