more sororities

by:

I think a campus as large as UT needs more sororities , why is it so hard to have a new one colonize here. I have friends at Auburn and they are much smaller and have like 17 sororities! Just wondering

has some of the nicer sorority houses in the country. Obviously there are a few schools like Bama where they can build outrageous ones, but compared to all but a small minority of elite Greek schools in locations with lower property values, UT's houses are very nice.

is a lie, they closed due to low numbers

Not true. Their numbers were fine and and they were a solid middle tier group. It wasn't hazing either. It was other risk management issues. They never intended to stay closed but things got complicated. This is the truth.

I was around in the late 80's Gamma Phi was not mid tier, they were lower tier but viable they pledged 35 or so in 1987 quota was in the low 50's or so . Had failed to make quota for 5-6 years. Similar to ADPI at TAMU and then they had some behavior issues. I don't know the details, and the International said your done. Remember it well.

Like my name says, I was here then and know exactly what went on. Their closure was done by their nationals and had nothing to do with numbers. There were many other groups who had issues that way. It was all risk management. The plan was to close and reopen but some complications got in the way that prevented it. This was the only sorority that left UT for reasons other than numbers.

Gamma Phi closed because their nationals wanted to close and then recolonize - but it never happened. UT Dean of women pleaded with their nationals to not close the chapter, but Gamma Phi thought they would close and recolonize because they had not been making quota. They were stronger than Aloha Phi and would have done fine if they did not close.

IMO, Texas is in the unique position of having a highly competitive recruitment while at the same time having a campus where it's not necessary to be Greek to have a good social life. So if PNMs are not getting the returns they like, they simply drop out and don't look back.

agree - what Maren said - that is why there is such a high drop rate during recruitment - if a pnm does not like the house that is still a viable option for them during recruitment, they drop and this campus has so much going on that everyone can find their place to belong here.

I agree! UT needs more sororities. Most other universities the size of UT have 20+.
