more sororities

by:

I think a campus as large as UT needs more sororities , why is it so hard to have a new one colonize here. I have friends at Auburn and they are much smaller and have like 17 sororities! Just wondering

I know and have you SEEN the houses that sororities at Bama are building??!! Gorg and palatial describe them!! EVERY house is getting a brand new beautiful house. They are completely tearing down already perfectly pretty houses and building these monsters! The pi phi house at UT looks like the projects to give a comparison

We make the top houses cut more so they will filter down - it just doesn’t work like it is supposed to- some would rather stay exclusive and the ones that take extras to fill whatever we decide quota is have ended up with “wilder” memberships that hurt their reputation
But we are trying! Lots of GREAT houses at UT!

PWG- Pretty White Girl Species Ending Threats:

1. PWGs mating males of other races.
2. PWGs relationships with butch / bi girls.
3. Increasing percentage of liberal passive white males not sheltering their same race potential mates from numerous outside species ending threats.
4. Dads not protecting their PWG vulnerable daughters from these numerous outside species ending threats.
5. The media now glamorizing mixed race mating.
6. The music industry attracting PWGs to mixed race mating cultures through rap, hip hop and soul music tracks.

A SPECIES EXTINCTION during our lifetime... 😞

The last time a completely new sorority (as opposed to a recolonization) came to UT was 1941, when AOPi chartered. Tradition reigns, and nobody wants a group that isn't well known and hasn't been on campus since the dawn of time. (The only NPCs that have never chartered here are Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Tau, Sigma Kappa, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and Theta Phi Alpha.)

It's also highly unlikely that anybody would want a group that left campus and came back -- only AXiD and KD have done it successfully. Basically, no NPC wants to take the risk of sinking millions of dollars into starting or recolonizing a chapter when chances are high that it would fail.

Besides, UT chapters are large, but not crazy large. When there are 100+ girls in a pledge class, maybe then it'll be time to think about extension.

Have Delta Zeta, Phi Mu, Alpha gamma Delta ever tried? They are pretty big in the SEC and so is AOPI .. Gamma Phi Beta is also an option.. But your right maybe when pledge classes start reaching in the 100+

All of those have been here and closed. They all closed for low numbers except for one.

is that UT isn't behind it's greek life the way so many other schools are. UT doesn't want an expansion. If you look at the percentage of students who are greek at UT compared to the schools with large houses etc. UT has a very small greek population.

by: Public Ivy

I agree UT wants to be UC Berkley or The University of Wisconsin not Alabama or Georgia. The administration will never loan money to build a house like a lot of SEC Universities.

is actually a really good school though. UT's Greek system could be spectacular if the school would help out. Instead we have a situation where not only would the school not lend money to help build a house, but shady development regulations and overlays make building or even buying property ridiculously difficult/expensive. West Campus is a major housing bubble with 5 new student housing buildings going up every year.

recruitment numbers have to be higher,

when y'all are being outpaced by Baylor and SMU (considering size of the campus), your panhellenic should reconsider how it operates...

I agree also that UT is not in the business to produce a strong greek life school, like the SEC schools seem to be, and the expensive property buble around campus makes it difficult to just start an organization without some serious capital if its going to suceed.

Other schools are built in much smaller towns with cheaper property: Auburn, Tuscaloosa, Athens, Oxford, College Station, and on and on.

UGA is commonly referred to as a "public Ivy" IT is the first state public university in the country. The houses on Milledge ( greek row ) are beyond gorgeous. It is a shame UT has no row or area where all the houses can be together. There bid day is UNREAL because everybody is out celebrating together basically. Bama loaned each sorority 12 million to be paid back over the next 30 years. There dues will be high. UGA's panhellenic just won a national recognition award fyi. God help us if we become like UC berkley

A number of the sorority houses are important historic landmarks. The Alpha Gam house, a white Victorian mansion nicknamed the Wedding Cake House, makes Buen Retiro look plain by comparison. The Theta house was built before the Civil War and looks right out of "Gone with the Wind."

UGA is ranked overall closer to A&M than Texas. Texas dies not want to expand Greek Life. Unlike Athens, Austin is a major city with tons if things to do. UT is on the level of University if Wisconsin, UCLA, Illinous, Michigan, Washington. It is a liberal campus and its values align more with west coast schools than SEC schools....

is a mixed campus politically. We have as much (or more) in common culturally with SEC schools than West Coast schools. UGA is ranked between us and A&M, and both are pretty close to us academically.

UT might be close to Wisconsin but don't kid yourself by comparing it to Cal, UCLA or Michigan. I got into all and got a full ride to UT but staying home at Cal. UT is great but not that good. Just as Cal is not Ivy.

Wisconsin...okay...who cares.

Right. UT doesn't give full rides to out of state students. Next.

UT is ranked close to all those schools nationally and internationally. That aside UT wouldn't have given an OOS student a full ride if they'd cured cancer.

UT has more in common with strong academic public schools in the South like UVA, UNC, UGA, UF, Georgia Tech and A&M culturally than it does with strong West Coast/Midwest schools like Wisconsin, Michigan and UCLA. Austin may be more liberal than the rest of Texas, but that's pretty relative. We aren't the only public Southern university with strong academics, and we don't have some radically progressive anti-Greek administration.
