spring recruitment
by: WonderingWhich sororities are known to take new members during the spring? Which ones gave out bids last spring?Honest feedback is helpful. Thanks!

Alpha Xi Delta always used to but I don't think they did last year. SDT is really below total and has to be recruiting at all times. If there are spots in other houses it would be only one or two and those usually get filled by word of mouth with friends. Don't count on spring openings because there really aren't any.

Any chapter who is looking to keep a competitive edge (save for the hallowed Big 6 who are all-too-aware of---and slaves to---the traditionally-negative "stigma" of recruiting outside of the formal process) will do this when they are under average chapter size. This number adjusts annually. So even chapters that always make quota and are strong chapters but maybe have uneven class distribution or graduate some seniors early or whatever, they will use that opportunity to pledge a handful of really strong girls so that they don't slip in size-comparison (and also some will pledge girls who might not have picked them in formal--as in, she might have been snapped up by a stronger house-- so that they can leverage that strength in formal recruitment when the girl is now on "their side" recruiting for them.) Sometimes it's a necessity (if your chapter is struggling for members it's just a way of life) but other times it is pure strategy (if you are upwardly mobile or are trying to be sure your house stays competitive and you don't want your edge to slip!) The idea is to make the "spring bids" count for something...meaning, they should always look for girls who will strengthen their positioning.

Yeah. Everyone will be over total after recruitment. but then they'll vote to raise total to average chapter size. That means anyone under that avg. size can add members up to that new total. This is to help chapters stay competitive with each other in size. XO is smart to do this--and it explains why they are holding their competitve edge--they do it selectively (as should all groups who do it) b/c they know that it only takes a few years of some other group taking advantage of this while they are sleeping and then suddenly the chapters who do not do it will look small when they return for formal recruitment.
