Each year it seems like the big 4 separates themselves further and further from the rest of the fraternities. I understand their physical houses are exponentially better than everyone else's but is that really what makes all of the top rushees flock to these houses. I feel like the playing field has never been this uneven.
In all due respect, maybe the reason why sigma chi has to "try so hard" is because they have to actually try to get rushees unlike the big 4 where kids are just lined up begging.

The Big 4 aren't really getting that much better. The reason it's probably so uneven now is that so few good fraternities survived the 80s and 90s purge. The old top tier was probably more than four houses, strong UT houses like Sigma Nu, Beta, Kappa Sig, Phi Delt, ATO, KA and Sigma Chi fell, and only a few have successfully returned to their former glory. Sigma Nu's had a failed colony, Beta had a protracted death over more than a decade, Phi Delt is a lower middle tier house, ATO is a stagnant middle tier house, KA is gone, and only Kappa Sig and to a lesser extent Sigma Chi have managed to come back in a big way. Because of this, the kids from the major feeder high schools heavily concentrated in the few houses that survived.

Kappa Sig has the best grades in the top tier, puts the most effort in, and jumped to top tier literally right after KA fell, so they were probably going to get there anyway. I'm the most impressed with them of the "Big 4" houses.
