smu vs. ut

by:

Many kids from prestigious and well connected families go to SMU, but some also go to UT. What makes them choose UT over SMU? Dallas had elite "mens clubs" and "womens clubs" like Calyx, Idlewild and Slipper, so why do they come down to Austin?

Whoever wrote UT had one if the strongest Greek systems in the country hasn't got a clue. UT is not a strong Greek school. Check your facts. Check your schools statistics too- it's not your fault but the top 8% thing brings some horrible students your way. UT has a great business school but the rest of the school is really sub par to others across the nation. Get out there and see the universities and you will learn I'm correct.

I'm not from SMU but they do have more money and prestige there- sorry

Football programs don't matter a while lot- good thing for UT because the longhorns haven't been good for a very long time, at least SMU has the excuse that they were given the death penalty and don't usually get top recruits. Texas doesn't have any excuses and they still suck at football. If I went to UT I'd leave football out of it!

You're a complete idiot, UT has always been considered among the premier Greek systems in the country, and you are obviously the one confused. To say we aren't even a strong Greek school is a complete laugh seeing as how only a handful of Greek systems in the country are actually better. I'm really curious to know where you go, because there's a 95% chance your school has an inferior Greek system, and unless you go to somewhere like Bama, Georgia, or Ole Miss you have no room to talk. Oh and our football programs been underperforming since about 2010, that's a really long stretch of mediocrity. Get out of here SMU.

Oh as for academics, most of our natural science and engineering departments are in the top 20 nationally at least, that isn't sub-par. Judging by your complete lack of knowledge of everything UT, mixed with your intense desire to bad mouth us on here anyway, you aren't bright at all.

Have you even been anywhere but Texas? Totally out of touch. Not surprised!

By: @dude and haha

Out of touch. UT is a top ranked academic school nationally and internationally (we ranked in the top 30 on an international ranking). It has one of the hardest sorority recruitments, one of the numerically largest Greek systems, and Round Up. You obviously are a very bored person who came on here to argue your opinion against facts, which disagree with you on every point you made. It's not a matter of being out of touch. UT is universally a highly ranked academic school, it is widely respected as one of the elite Greek systems in the nation, and has one of the most historically successful football programs in the US. Get a life and get your unfounded opinions off of here.

I'm so wise and world travelled, and while I admit I didn't do an ounce of research before I came on here to make these confrontational statements, I have strong feelings about it. I'm a poetry major at a tier 3 New England school so I certainly know what I'm talking about.

some troll left the state and is now convinced he's a genius, good for you. Literally nothing said above was inaccurate, but you're sure adamant on saying everyone else's facts are incorrect when all you have provided is actually refuted by facts. If it makes you feel better about getting rejected have at it.

Here's some citations since you asked me to check my facts. "In the 2013 Center for World University Rankings, The University of Texas at Austin was ranked 26th among the world’s top 100 universities."
College football programs with the most wins: "2. Texas: 853-326-34". UT has one of the hardest sorority rushes based on the percentage of recruits who get into a house (second behind Indiana). By number of students in Greek life, UT has one of the largest Greek systems in the country. Maybe do some research before asking for a fact check, you just keep making yourself look stupid.

OMG

This little "debate" is funny.

I'll start off by saying i'm a Texas native and I'm an aggie fan, though I never applied because it was never my intention to stay in Tx (was gonna go to UofArk).

Reputation wise, UT DOES have a better reputation. However, it's not comparable to Princeton, Yale or Harvard. The only schools I've ever seen compared are Rice and Vandy, mostly because they try hard to be labeled the Harvards and Princetons of the south.

Money wise, SMU is a private schools funded by very wealthy and prominent alumni.

Football wise, well duh, UT>SMU. There's no debate there. But it's Texas, therefore, it is a part of the debate

I would say SMU is more elitist because of the people who go here. You have heirs and heiresses of corporations/companies, sons/daughters of politicians and old money. Money runs SMU. And as someone who was a GDI their first year, it IS virtually impossible to enjoy school or have a social life unless you're greek. You find out who your real friends are after recruitment, because they all vanish.

In terms of Greek life, I'd say they're about the same. Both are competitive, but you're comparing a private school(with less students) to a state school (with many students).

I also want to add, that, if it weren't for money, certain houses here would be gone. but the alumni also tend to fund our school.

Obviously in college you're gonna have people from money and people who are poor. But the majority of students at SMU are wealthy.

is totally a resonable response. SMU and UT are both good schools, and I don't have any problem with that statement. Both are great Greek schools too. I was offended by the third party moron talking about how UT is somehow a sub-par academic school, with a weak Greek system, and a historically poor football program. I have no disrespect for SMU,it's a great school, just care about the trolling idiots who don't have a clue what they're talking about. Oh I'd add Duke with Rice and Vandy probably too.

Agreed.

UT has one of the best engineering programs in the WORLD and one of the best. UT also has a recruitment system comparable to Alabama and Ole Miss. And I gotta admit, the greek system is 'better' (imo) than A&M (no offense), cause tradition runs deep at UT (for Greeks and legacies).

The football is good. UT is one of those schools with a huge cult following. The fans are still fans even when the team isn't the best. But historically UT is a powerhouse, football wise.

Both schools have their weaknesses and strengths. And a lot of times, there ARE other factors that play into where someone chooses to go.

I chose to go to SMU because of Dallas. Nothing against Fayetteville but when I stayed with a few friends there, I knew it wasn't for me. I didn't feel comfortable.

Just like a lot of people choose UT over A&M. College station=hell, Austin=life.

agree except for the UT fans being fans win or lose. Did you catch the picture above the cotton bowl stadium when they played Oklahoma? Half the stadium was crimson and half the stadium was GONE!!

The two schools are too different to really compare, but if I had to I'd say that money is obviously a bigger deal at SMU on average than it is at UT. That is because SMU is a private school rich in history especially with old Texas and Dallas families. Therefore in one way, it's more "elitist." But, if you look at the the top 4 fraternities and PKT at UT, especially Fiji SAE and now KSig, these houses are filled with some of the most prominent and wealthy families in the state of Texas. These houses are much more elite than any group that SMU has to offer. So that being said, SMU is on average more old money, but if you look at the top of the top at both schools, UT has got SMU beat.

SMU founded in the 1910s though? How old money can they really be.

Parents pay for college so we need to go back at least 20 to 25 yrs 1885/1890 by your dates- that's getting old because the parents were being born 1865/1870- that's old money for our country. By your dates the Kennedy family made their money after SMU opened and they are old money at least 3 generations back.

I don’t understand this meaningless debate. I’m a graduate student at SMU because they offered me a great opportunity to work with one of the best professors in my field and a great package. I come from a poor country, and I’m not rich. I know that I have the credentials to apply and be admitted to UT and other top institutions. In fact professors gave me interviews at UT and they lamented not having an specialty in my field. And even if I had the chance of studying at UT, I would still choose SMU. So there you go, not everything or everybody fit into your narrative.

Undergraduates (the one's interested in fraternities and sororities) that attend SMU and UT Austin are pretty different. SMU has higher percentage of students from private schools. UT undergrads are dominated by automatic admits (top 6% freshman applicants from Texas high schools). Getting very base here - "rich kids" dominate at SMU. But "rich kids" do not dominate UT Austin.

As far as connections go. Employers do not care if you were in a fraternity or sorority. And other than someone applying for their first job, I've never seen such affiliation on a resume for a professional position, though you must disclose such affiliation for federal employment requiring a security clearance.
