hiking in heels

by:

Hey y’all! I’m going to be going through rush next year and I was wondering how helpful the Hiking In Heels Coach really is. It is pretty expensive but, I would consider if it is truly worth it. Is it worth it? People who have used her, what is the process like?

How much is a rush coach? A lot of my friends coming to UT are using this but not really going into many details.

You know the old saying - if you have to ask how much something costs, you can't afford it.

According to the girls at my school, it's a group of girls now vs. one person.

It's actually like ten girls now, past recruitment chairs from a bunch of diff Big 12 and SEC schools.

no. you're going to end up in the sorority you are supposed to, with or without a class. most sororities already know who they are gonna take by now. recruitment is just a formality. its 100% who you know. I suggest going to parties and trying to meet girls. it work a million times better.

Using it helped get me lock in an invite to Studio 54 w a sorority soooo I'm gonna say ya def helpful.

Yes! I used it and it was SO helpful. Especially how they helped me with my rec packets and finding me alumnae for the rec letters. They have sample emails on how to ask alumnae, and also templates that explain to them how to go and complete them too.

Some of my family friends hadn't been writing them correctly and they probably wouldn't have been counted. It was kind of a lifesaver for me because it's so stressful knowing if you're doing everything right, and my local panhellenic association wasn't helpful at all (I reached out for help and they didn't even email me back!).

I think ladies can definitely go through and get great houses without one, but I'm really thankful that I had the help. You only go through once (hopefully) and I just wanted to get it right the first time vs. re-rushing like a lot of girls end up doing.

I would actually wonder if it is the hiking in heals Coach. Who says ladies like that?

Also, resumes matter but more because of WHO writes them than how they are done. I read my letter written to one of PKT chapters and it was very sweet but only special because the alum was a UT one who knew me very well. All of my letters and recs were like that where possible because I was told that is what they needed to be -and that sweet one worked! Letters and recs open the doors but then it Is up to the chapters.

If you want someone to help you with small talk, resumes, clothes etc it might be worth hiring a coach to boost your self confidence and help with the details. Just know that those things really are not the most important parts. Social skills and connections are it at UT. If she wasn’t in PKT, she probably really won’t know how to or be able to get you into those. I don’t mean to be cruel, but there is very little interaction between the tiers at UT just because everyone runs with different fraternities.

And as for the invite to Studio 54.....might be useful but might not too. Tons of girls go up there for those parties. Depends on which sorority you are staying with and if they introduce you around etc. if the girl you are staying with ends up loving you and you meet lots of people, that would certainly be helpful! It will be fun whatever though!

Sounds like you are someone's mom-
Sweet roc's are great, but that really doesn't matter. A pnm needs to know people and be able to be friendly and outgoing during rush, that matters more. Also, while their are cliques at ut, the girls/guys that only hang out with a certain frat/sorority are the socially awkward one's that can't go outside their comfort zone and feel the need to stick with their high school friends.

And it sounds like you are not in PKT so don’t know how it works in those...

I didn’t say the sweet Rex mattered I said who wrote it does

Okay, mom! I matters who writes the rec, not how well they no you-the only way a rec truly effects someone is when it is negative.

This does sound like someone's mom who needs help.

Yes - rec letters aren't as helpful unless the person KNOWS your daughter. It's not because of how "well" it's written (although duh that's obvs just as important) - it's because of the FORM itself where it ASKS if the person writing it knows the rushee and her family and how much the sorority factors knowing her into it.

The chapters won't favor a rushee as highly when alum doesn't know them vs. when the alum writing it does. Two different piles. One pile has a better chance getting in, and one pile is less likely to.

It's obvs better to have one than NOT have one though. If you have lots of sorority connections for each house you can use those. If you don't, it doesn't really matter if it's a coach who helps connect you to people to write them. It's all about having the letters that matters (whatever resources you've got, use 'em - whatever that is.) Otherwise, she's going to get cut after Open House (this is round one at UT) from everyone one she doesn't have a rec from.

I used them and so did several friends. They were very helpful and sweet! They connected me to girls currently in the sororities before rush so more girls could end up "being allowed" to vote on me come recruitment week. (FYI, actives can't vote on a PNM unless we've met her at some point.) I'm in a house I LOVE. This year's stressful enough. PNMs - you do you.

Are all the sororities the same? Seems like who writes them might be true for some but not others? I have heard that matters too. I guess my real question is how do you get on lists so you don’t get dropped after first day? I am sure girls you know put you on there if they want you but can a good rec also?

By: Yikes
by: ajlskajd

1) You know someone who puts you on this sorority's list they make of girls they want before rush.
2) You turn in your letters of rec and pray the recruitment team picks you.
3) You work with a coach who introduces you to girls in the houses (who puts you on the list - see #1).
4) You do all of the above. The above HELPS a LOT. But it still doesn't guarantee you won't get dropped after day 1.

Don’t give money to this scheme.

Don't even try to get ready for rush. Recs? That's a lot of trouble. Reaching out to your connections? Sounds like work. Hiring a coach? Ya expensive.

Bottom line: if you have the time and the money, use all the resources you can get your hands on.

By all means, if you're not willing to put in the work or if you can't afford it - go SDT.

Greek life isn't a "scheme". All the money for dues goes towards social activities during the semester and a lifelong sisterhood and network. Eyeroll.

a coach will help u get connections but if ur not good socially or don’t fit the sorority’s criteria then ur not getting a bid from that sorority. and this is an unpopular statement, but connections are extremely helpful but if u have the social skills, looks money, u can get into a top sorority without connections, including PKT
