money

Why does money play such a big factor in UT Greek life. As a member of a top tier fraternity at the UofA, I can say that most rushees are picked mostly based who they are. After talking to my friends at UT about the Greek system, it’s seems kind of ridiculous how important money is.

You mean get ripped off a little with a bottom tier or a lot by a top tier fraternity. The more money a rushee's family has, makes him a better mark for financial fraud as an active.

Inner Chapter Fraud is the biggest risk to our UT Greek Chapters. Chapter Officers are finding it very easy to skim the budgets for their personal use. We must require Chapter financial audits each semester for a UT Greek Chapter to remain in good standing.

According to UT's website, there are 26 fraternities in IFC. The majority have semester dues somewhere between $675 to around $1000. Six have dues that are around $3000 with FIJI topping out at $6800. These facts alone answer your question.

There are UT fraternities within financial reach of many students attending UT. Those fraternities provide a fun fraternity experience and the same lifetime benefits - possibly more in some cases. They just aren't discussed much on Greek Rank.

Also - students at UT are not richer than students at any other university, they just act like it.
