camps, zip code cuts, etc... what's the deal?
by: OOS ConcernsI am coming from OOS and have been hearing about things that make me very nervous to rush at UT. What is the deal w/ attending "the good camps"? In my state, I spend my summers going to and teaching dance and cheer clinics; I have always had dance, cheer, or sports-related activities throughout the year. I am curious about this different culture I will face at UT. What are these "good camps" I keep hearing about? Also, what is the deal w/ zip code cuts? I live in a great neighborhood, but my town in general is an affluent place to live. (there are no suburbs - it's just a nice, mid-sized town where almost everybody lives a comfortable lifestyle) Do I have to be a multi millionaire to get into a sorority here? I have a 3.8 GPA, but I am hearing everyone has perfect grades going through rush. Is it even worth my time to go through rush? I think I would be a great sister to the right house, but I have been hearing a lot of discouraging words. Can anyone offer something positive?

Don't worry about it. There's nothing you can do about it. Some houses will be out of your reach but you should be able to find a home if you're cute, nice and don't act awkward. Concentrate on the stuff you can control like conversation skills, letters of support and looking the best you can. Good luck!

There is a house for everyone at UT. You have to open your eyes and close your ears under the tents between houses. "Tent talk" in my opinion is the number one reason girls drop out during recruitment. What might be a great match for you, may rub someone else the wrong way and their negative attitude could sway you and that is a big mistake. Trust me, you don't want to drop out if you can help it. Ride it out and see where you end up. Go to bid day and just because someone else thinks your house "is not that great" does not mean it is not outstanding. It means some insensitive girls decided her big mouth was so much more important to exercise than the preservation of some else's feelings. UT is filled with very strong houses. These camps are not so much about what they are, but the connections that are made when the girls attend. Some houses pride themselves on keeping a close knit group of girls that have been friends for a very long time. Others realize that people change and grow and that those girls might be a great asset.

Thanks for the positive feedback. My mom and sister went to a private university that does not have sororities, so I am not a legacy, but I really want to experience rush and find the right house for me.
