do letters of support matter?

I know that every chapter requires a recommendation letter (the actually form filled out by the alumnae) but how necessary are separate letters of support in which the writer talks about you specifically and brags on you? Do the chapters care about these or put any real weight on them, or is it kind of pointless and all you need is the letter of rec?
