difference between top and mid

by:

What would you say is the defining line between the "top tier" and "mid tier?"

Is it simply wealth, house, and quality of girls, because I think we all can agree some mid tier fraternites have quality guys that any of the top would take

I think it goes to personality. Some guys who come from money don't want it to be a focus in their life so they choice a house that does not think it is the most important thing on the table.

This is the biggest difference. Same with girls. The big 4 fraternities and "pkt". Grew up in greek Texas families. They wore sports coats to their private high schools in downtown Houston and Dallas (small town Texas exceptions). The middle tier guys and girls wore american eagle to their suburb high schools in which comparably to their peers thought they were "wealthy" and decided to rush when they got to Texas (not knowing much about the tradition involved). They now think they are "frat" and try really hard to mimic those individuals listed above.

Don't feel bad. I'm from the first category and I can assure you that plenty of my friends' families have lots of old tradition and no money left in the family. They spent it all for appearances and their credit cards have maxed out. Some of you "suburban" folks have loads of money in the bank and your parents can sleep at night knowing they are not in debt. Geograpy isn' everything. Don't let anyone intimidate you. Some of these kids have a lot to hide.

I have to disagree, at least for the sororities. Lots of private school girls in the Core 4

No such thing as the core four. Not going to happen.

I know plenty of private school kids in middle tier fraternities, and tons of Big 4 guys went to public schools like Memorial and Highland Park. Never seen a more ridiculously generalized statement about the differences between the top and middle tier. All the middle tier weren't suburban geeds and all the top tier weren't "frat stars" before coming to UT.

It's all about connections and who you know in the houses before you rush. Camp girls (Longhorn, Waldemar, Mystic) all know lots of girls, especially in the Big 6 so these girls will pull for them during rush. Also girls from the certain high schools- Memorial, Highland Park, Midland, Westlake, Stratford- all pull for their friends from their same schools. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

but those high schools don't produce any higher quality than any suburban schools so it doesn't mean much coming from those schools anymore...

Suburban school girls get into DG, AXO, ADPi and APhi.

this is generalized and obviously not bullet proof, I would say that for the most part it is accurate. A lot of the middle tier guys love and respect their fraternities much more than the upper tier guys which might make them come off as "try hards". It's just another entitlement for the upper tier guys

The reason top houses have so many ACC kids is because they actually went to real high schools where the "top 10%" rule doesn't apply.

great to see that they prefer community college kids from "real" schools to UT kids from "fake" ones.

I don't think kids from St. John's typically attend ACC unless they've had some issues other than academics. LOTS of ways to get into UT other than top 8% and if your school is so awesome, your standardized testing scores would show it.

90% of The University of Texas is filled up by the top 10% rule. It is state law. The reason why people say it was lowered to 8% was only because the quota was filled up before it reached 10%, not because the legislation was changed. That means there is 10% of available positions in which you are competing with kids outside of the automatic enrollment. In which, liberal UT gives these spots to minorities and out of state kids.

So no, you are dumb.

if someone can afford St. Johns, you'd think they could also afford a tutor to get into the top 8%. ACC kids are an embarrassment to the UT Greek system

You are the dumb one. The legislation was changed (SB 175 Passed by the 81st Legislature in Spring of 2009). UT Board of Regents appealed to the State Legislature that they wanted more control of class profiles, therefore they petitioned that the "The Top 10% Rule" be modified so that auto admits only filled 75% of the incoming class. This was granted. Therefore, effective Fall 2011, auto admits only fill 75% of the class (not 90%). Each Fall, no later than September 15, UT notifies Texas high schools of the class rank need for current Juniors to obtain auto admit status (7%, 8%, 9%....whatever). If a student's class rank meets this guideline, they are an auto admit, even if the incoming class yield is "off" and that fills more than 75% of the class.

So before you come here pretending you know what you are talking about I suggest you actually know what you are talking about.
