out of state sorority rush
by: user312
Hi, all!
I've heard that Texas usually has a pretty biased system towards Old Texas, old money, and legacies when it comes to Greek Life. This is somewhat scary to me, being a Southern California girl with no idea what I'm getting myself into. I was under the impression that out of staters can sometimes make the top sororities, or ones with the best reputations, by being gorgeous and having a lot of money. Is this the only way to find yourself in a good house? By no means is my family financially unstable, and I'd like to think I'm generally attractive enough, but I'm not sure how biased the system is and have heard some negative comments about it. (Note: I have a very close family friend who is an extremely active member of Pi Beta Phi who would write a recommendation but not sure if that goes far)
Of course, I'm in no place to comment as I have never experienced it - so I'm asking for help! Is it necessary to stock up on designer handbags for rushing or should I just hope my conversational skills go far enough? I'm super excited for a fresh start in a new state but worry I'll be a fish out of water - any comments or guidance about UT Austin would be appreciated.
Also, if anyone knows the reputations of each sorority at UT I would be super happy to see your viewpoints, understanding of course that they are objective.
Many thanks!

Looking put together and confident is much more important than having tons of name brands. Be yourself. You don't want to end up in a sorority where you aren't appreciated or wanted just because someone said it is a "top" one anyway. I know this sounds bad, but PKT will be able to tell if you stocked up on name brand stuff for rush. You for sure don't want to look like a try hard....again....be yourself and it will work out.
Despite how it sounds on here, almost everyone loves the sorority they end up pledging and has a great time socially. Austin is awesome! You will love it! Good luck.

Okay, I was an out of state student from Southern California also and literally had no strong connections and I am just going to tell you what I would have wanted to know. PKT are top sororities but for an out of state student, the hard truth is that those sororities will likely not be the best fit. Those three sororities all have entire friends groups that all go into one sorority and they are never looking to broaden there friend group. It won't be impossible to make friends in on of these sororities but it will definitely be harder in the beginning and there will always be "cool girls" that you are intimidated by.
Rush is hard but its not insane. if you are normal and pretty enough and can keep a conversation then you will get into alpha phi and/or ACHIO most likely. Big 6 is obviously what you are aiming for and it is definitely possible. You basically have to live in Hardin if you want to be in PKT but if you have no connections with those three (literally know someone in it rn) then Callaway is also a great option. If you don't party that much than SRD is also good.
Another big piece of advice is to absolutely reach out to anyone you know or heard of from your town who goes here now. When I got into UT, the girls who went to UT already absolutely knew that I got in because they started to follow me. Follow the sorority instagrams also. If anyone from UT started to follow you from your hometown then also reach out to them if they haven't already reached out to you. I PROMISE IT ISNT WIERD. literally as an out of stater myself I literally love when girls text me who are going here because I love when California girls come here because I wanna help them out!!! I know how you feel, its really overwhelming and seems crazy but reaching out to girls will help a lot.

pi phi- there is one Southern California family in pi phi and so they have a few socal girls but they usually only take one or maybe two. top house but lot of Highland park girls and cliques that were formed in highschool. party hard and prettiest probably. TOP HOUSE
theta- has a few California girls in the Sophmore year but for the most part its veryyyyy cliquey and once again has a lot of girls that are high school friends. more laid back vibe then pi phi ad party. TOP HOUSE
Kappa- least cliquey of the above three but still 100% has a group from high school that will rule kappa and not acknowledge you if you aren't cool enough. top house.
Okay now the other half of the big 6 does not have the hgishchool clique situation like the above three. more out of staters in these also,
Chi O- just below kappa. super sweet girls but about 40% don't go out (religion) while the rest do. Girls are really tight with each other. more of the city girls. top house
Tridelt- same as chi o but frankly the girls are just a little less pretty. more of the suburban girls. these girls are super fun though. top house
zeta - these girls are hot and no one can deny that. mostly blonde. ditzy reputation but not necessarily completely true. party hardddddd.

I would really just focus on the houses where you feel like you actually fit in the most. Every UT house is strong and full of smart, pretty, talented, involved girls. Every single one. Every house has a full social life. Every one.
I think the pp makes a good point that even if you were to get into PKT, you might always feel like you really don't belong because you didn't spend 10 summers at Camp Longhorn or Waldemar with your sisters or weren't on the Highland Park drill team or a Memorial cheerleader. And going back even further - because you weren't in the same playgroup because your mom wasn't a Texas Kappa (or whatever) with your friends' moms.
If you want to go back to Cali after graduation, you're honestly in luck because some of the big West Coast sororities are middle tier at UT. It's still very competitive to get in, but the houses are more democratic than just looking at your gene pool.

If you are getting information from GR, then that might be your first problem. Things have changed tremendously and keep on changing. Big 6 cuts and pastes their 1970's values on every other post. Then lower sororities like ADPi or KD try to tell the world to just go through rush and be happy where you end up. TBH, depending on the year, who rushes, how many rush, how many each sorority takes and who just happens to click better, will be how you end up.

I am going to go out on a limb and say that AXO and Alpha Phi have higher standards than "if you are normal and pretty enough and can keep a conversation then you will get into alpha phi and/or ACHIO most likely." I believe they expect more. That said, all the sororities are great, just depends on what you want. And what they want. Good luck.
