new member average

by:

Why is the highest average of new member GPA a 3.48 at the university when a people on different forums say sororities cut people based on GPA. The minimum I've heard lately is a 3.5

I'm guessing they accept some people with really really low GPAs and the girls they don't know they accept because they brig the house GPA up with their 4.0

You DO realize that a college GPA of 3.5 is A LOT HARDER to get than a high school GPA of 3.5. My guess is that most people's freshman GPA is at least .5 lower than their high school GPA- the classes are harder, time management can be a big struggle making it hard to give 100% to classes, new friends, and sorority/other activities. The girls getting 3.5's their freshman year were the ones making straight A+'s in Honors & AP in high school (at good schools, not random tiny ones).

For sophomores going through rush, your chances are going to be highest if your freshman GPA was at or above the chapter's average. Doesn't mean girls with lower GPA's don't get bids, but it will be easier if you are above.

But isn't the new member GPA average for UT the average of all girls who got initiated with their high school GPAs? Or is the new member GPA calculated after they complete a semester or a year of college?

No, it's the college GPA after the initiation semester. Not their high school GPA.

so you are saying if you have a low college gpa but a really high high school gpa , and ranked pretty high they take both into consideration?

No. Once you have a college GPA, no one looks at your high school GPA. College GPA. College activities. That's all that matter.

Generally, your college GPA should be in the same range as the average GPA of each chapter in order for them to consider you.

I don't know if the link will post but you can google "UT Panhellenic GPA" and find the link. The page clearly says the Fall 2015 GPA for new members, meaning their UT GPA.

So it would be more acceptable for a sophomore to rush with a lower GPA than some of the freshman since they took college classes for a year?

No. Some houses will drop you right away because you're already a proven GPA reducer.

Yes, the chapters do not expect sophomores to have freshman GPA's on par with the average high school GPA. How difficult is this to understand?

If you have a 3.5+ from your freshman year, you have practically nothing to worry about grade-wise.

If you had a 3.0-3.49, you're probably OK for most chapters. A few may cut you for grades but since you'll never know the actual reason that any house cuts you, it really doesn't matter.

If you had below a 3.0, you will be considered a grade risk at most chapters and will need major in-house connections and a stellar resume (HS & freshman year) to have a chance.

I meant comparing a sophmores college GPA to a freshmans high school GPA?

Your college GPA is going to need to be in the general vicinity of a chapter's average GPA for actives.

I don't know why you're having a hard time understanding this.
