zip code cuts
by: PNMI've heard that a lot of the sororities cut girls based on which zip code they're from. I went to a well known private school in Dallas, but don't live in Highland Park or Preston Hollow. My parents paid full tuition and we live in a nice neighborhood, just not the big ones. Will I get cut for not being from the "right" zip code even though I went to a good school and have (I think) a strong resume and some connections?

Possibly. If it appears from your house or neighborhood that sorority costs may be a financial stretch for you and your family, then some houses are probably going to cut you. Honestly though, the biggest obstacle is being unknown at all especially in the earlier rounds. It's much easier to cut someone no one in your house knows when you have to make a huge number of cuts.

The out of state girls pay $200k plus to go to UT with out of state tuition. They aren't poor and many are from wealth so a zip code is silly since we can't possibly know every zip code in the country. Totally different from saying we recruit our friends because we know them.

There are plenty of oos people who are on financial aid, scholarships, grants, loans etc. and need to work to pay their tuition. You don't have any way of knowing how they're paying their tuition. Zip code searching is a way to try to figure out if someone can actually afford the additional expense of a sorority or if she's going to drop out because of financial strain within a year or two.

zip code cuts aren't about determining if a pnm can afford a sorority; it's about getting rich girls.
OOS girls aren't at a disadvantage with regard to zip code cuts, since actives can google any zip code in the country to determine if the pnm is from an affluent area. OOS girls need to network more to meet actives prior to rush, so they may be disadvantaged from that stand point.

Grow up! Where a person lives does not show if they can pay the bills or not! The girls in charge of Financial can tell you that it is the Zip Code girl that doesn't pay her dues and steals from her roomie. So that is a bunch of bull! They do Zip Code cuts so they look good. Enough said.

BIG 6 will zip code cut & sometimes MID 3 will; but as the poster below said, if you went to a school that feeds into the UT chapters, you will be fine.
