about sorority recruitment

by:

I'm going to be going through sorority recruitment in the fall, and I'm afraid I'm going to cut from every chapter. I heard that if you maximize your options your will get a bid at a house, as long as you were invited to at least one house on pref night. I know a lot of girls drop out if they are not invited back to the big 6,but how many girls get released from rush if they maximize their options?

Honestly, not that many. Of the girls who don't get bids, I've heard 80% or more drop out vs being completely dropped.

If you do want to be a little more strategic about ranking every day, just remember that almost every pnm will want Big 6 and think they're a shoo-in even though less than half of the pnms get Big 6 bids. So as you rank the houses you want to return to each day, if you still happen to have all six Big 6 in 10 party round, I'd make sure you rank 1-2 of the other houses that you liked the most in your top 6 to give you more chances for a bid. It seems like every year there are a few girls who carry all 6 to Skit and then get dropped by all 6 houses the morning of pref.

If PNM's are honest with themselves, they know whether they really have a shot at PKT or Big 6 or not. I had all 6 Big 6 for Philanthropy, but ended up with only 3 invitafions to skit (1 Big 6 and 2 mid-tiers I hadn't really thought much about earlier in the week). I prefffed the 2 mid-tiers and got a bid to one of them. I've been so happy in my house so I just wish I had focused my attention on the houses where there were more girls like me all week and not been obsessed with Big 6. Even if you are "Big 6" material, I still think it's better to keep a mid-tier option on your schedule- like no HP girls ever seem to go Zeta so they should try to keep AXO or Alpha Phi as a Big 6 backup since HP girls do pledge there sometimes.

She is right.....if you are in state with no connections focus more on ones outside of big six. If you have connections with two in big six you can certainly go stay with them in the spring and try to get to know more but just be honest with yourself. If ones you know want you, they will introduce you around a lot. If that isn’t happening, recognize that for whatever reason you probably are not going to be one of the 300 out of 1100 they are keeping after the first round. PKT does not do any recruiting in the summer. Rest do both Spring and summer. If you aren’t getting asked to do stuff over the summer by Zeta, Tri Delt, or Chi O you
probably are not on their target lists. I know girls who were who did not get into any of big six though. Just go in knowing what it is. Rush week is awful for both sides but so fun rest of the year to be in a sorority.....any one!

80% of girls dropping on their own? Yeah, they're dropping bc SDT is their ONLY option. If you're even considering UT and you don't have a TON of connections from school or camp or whatnot, just drop the money and hire a sorority rush coach. Or settle for SDT when everyone else drops you.

^^^^this

if u think u are big 6 material, still include alpha chi/alpha phi in the mix, as they are super; you will get cut from big 6 unless you have 40 actives pulling for u and to be honest, alpha chi/alpha phi cut the heck out of girls, too. u just gotta be open for ut rush, for sure.

Uh oh.... Howd oes anyone end up with 40 girls pulling for them? I think I will know several in all big six chapters but to think that I might end up with that many who are actually want me badly enough to be pulling for me sounds.....unlikely. I know girls and they probably liked me at school and camp and I was very involved but they were older so I didn't know them that well. For sure not 40! Unless.....do girls pull for girls from their schools or camps if they knew them or of them but weren't the best of friends?

if you went to camp, then you probably know girls in the big six or the mid tiers. girls pull for girls they know/like and having gone to camp will help.

I know the OP's already gone through recruitment, but I agree - a lot of girls actually get dropped from all the houses vs. drop out. There are just so many stellar rushees coming through, it's uber-competitive. You really do need about 40 actives pulling for you, but it's possible because we all did it!

If you somehow get dropped before pref night there's no going back - you just don't get anything. I'm sure Panhellenic is trying to workout a better process, but until then, no - no rushees are guaranteed any house, not even a bottom tier (especially now that they've taken SDT out of formal rush). This sorority rush coach wrote a pretty good article addressing a bunch of UT-related rush stuff on her site (Hiking Heels Rush Coaching). Hope recruitment went really well for you.

Thank you for the advice but I know I am not big 6 as I really have no connections in those (or any ) houses. I went to a very small parochial school and don't know too many girls. I am attractive and personable but a little quiet until you get to know me. I think a sorority will be good to make friendships but I'm not very status conscience. How should I approach it?

Just be yourself.

All of this "you need to know 40 people, etc." is ridiculous. If you are cute, smart, outgoing and participated in athletic and other group activities you will be wanted by a lot of great sororities. Be talkative to everyone in every house. Never think, I will never get in to this particular sorority. Also, make sure you have a letter of recommendation for each house. You will be fine!

But my question was about the other sororities. I'm not going big 6. It's been determined. I don't have connections. Will I get dropped from them too if I maximize my options?

I think you're thinking too much into this. Don't worry about it until you get to rush because different people give you different opinions.
I didn't know anyone going through and still got a mid tier house that I loved.
Yes sororities have pre recruitment "strategies" but if you are a awesome and personable girl houses will want you, even if you don't know anyone in the house.

Difference between big six and others during rush is that you do not have to know people in order to get a bid. Only reason big six is so hard is because so many girls already know each other in those. Be yourself and enjoy the week.

"Enjoy the week"
Said no one about rush ever.

OP: you may end up surprised, positively or negatively. But you can always try again as a sophomore too if you end up not having enough connections or if (unlikely) you do get cut from all of the houses except sdt.

I know one SRD girl who is super cute, a cheerleader, salutatorian and student council member at her big, suburban TX high school who only had SDT and AEPhi left. She's a little overweight and i can't help but think that was the reason why.

I've gotten to know and love 2 gorgeous girls from California who dropped after getting cut from big 6 and 2 of the mids, so they had options they weren't willing to take.

This talk about 'just be yourself, you'll be fine' is SO off (really means, at the very least, you will end up with bottom tiers or just SDT).

If you get cut from the big 6 or more there are still great options like Alpha Phi, Kappa Delta, AZD, etc. These chapters have great sisterhoods and do all the same kind of events as everyone.

KD and AZD are bottom tier who take the girls who didn't go big 6 or mid 3;

@lol ... So they didn't go 6 or mid... Lower tier is great for these women. As I said, these chapters have great sisterhoods and events.

Keep bashing. Don't support Panhellenic spirit. That's this site.

Real PNMs: KD and AZD are the real deal.

this site is not for alums from greekchat trying to boost their bottom tier groups; ALL UT chapters have great sisterhoods but it's just a matter of the cool girls versus the randoms (SDT), awkwards (ADPi), not-so-cute girls (ADPi, SDT), wanna be's/try-hards (KD, KD and KD) and country-cute leftovers (AZD).

if you don't go big six, try to get mid 3 (alpha chi, alpha phi, dg). I'd wait til next year and try as a soph before I went adpi, kd or azd.

By: sup

Yep. Let's make mid 3 the future bottom 3 by getting rid of current bottom ADPi, KD, AZD. You just don't get it.

If those are your only options left as a freshman it's not going to be any better as a sophomore. This is dumb advice. Some girls just aren't ever going to have what it takes to get anything other than bottom tier. There's nothing wrong with that and if they take the chance and accept their bid they will eventually realize they are where they fit in best.

I'd also put DG right down there with adpi and kd. Stop flattering yourselves.

Ps This advice doesn't apply to SDT at all. It's better to be independent than part of that little freak show.

OH PLEASE. Spoken like a bottom active trying not to be jealous of mid tier DG.

OP: If you manage to get a bid from DG, you are very lucky; TAKE IT! They aren't Big 6 but they are definitely NOT down there with KD and ADPI. Here it is:

top-PKT (Pi Phi, Kappa, Theta)
CHIO, DDD, ZETA

mid-AXO, APHI, DG

bottom-KD, ADPI, AZD

SDT

ALL chapters have great sorority fun: mixers, bigs/littles, work week, philanthropy and their own traditions. ALL chapters have smart & accomplished women.

The only difference is:

The top of the Big 6 (pkt) have a little more money and know each other already; the bottom of the Big 6 (chio, ddd, zeta) couldn't get into the top of the Big 6;

The mid 3 (alpha chi, alpha phi, dg) tend to be attractive & couldn't get into zeta for whatever reason.

The bottoms (adpi, kd, azd, sdt) tend to have more shy and more quirky girls or even bookish girls and may have just a BIT less on looks throughout their entire group (not to say they don't have some really pretty girls).

ALL CHAPTERS HAVE TRADITIONS, MIXERS, THEIR OWN SPOT TO HANG, SEMI FORMALS, TONS OF FUN, SISTERHOOD STUFF, STRONG NATIONALS, ETC.

I've read the mean comments about sdt so decided to check the sdt Texas fb, website and videos. They seem like a nice fun group with (gasp) diversity ! I hope the rest of the Greek community starts to support each other and pnms ignore the comments. Sure not having a house can be a negative but other than that there's nothing wrong with sdt.

@^ who do you think you are calling sdt that little freak show. If you think you're so much better than they are strictly because of the status of your sorority you are sadly mistaken. Or you are so desperately insecure. If you're for real I feel very sorry for you. I'd gladly accept a bid from any bottom tier than have to call you my sorority sister. Peace out.
