spring recruitment

Really? That seems really quick. We've only been back like a week and a half. I sorta think that's not true. However, it's the same MO as last year in regards to APhi.

Yeah, APhi did---I know (of) 2 of the girls. I think they COB'd 5-6 girls? All were already friends with girls in the house. They really got right on that, huh?

I haven't heard anything about other houses, though.

I heard from a girl on my floor that they aren't doing it and neither is Kappa.

Ok, shouldn't all the houses have COB at the same time though? Especially since it seems like Panhel infers that on both FB and Insta? They specifically call it COB and have sign up info. I agree...the APhi thing does seem weird or not fair or something.

alpha phi has gotten pretty selective so it's not all that suprising. they seem to cob girls that are already close friends with girls in the house already

Here's how it works: any time a chapter has fewer members than Chapter Total, they are allowed to COB (Continuous Open Bidding). They might be 1 member below Chapter Total, or 20 members below Total, it doesn't matter. Now, is it worth it (or, arguably, fair?) for a chapter to participate in a structured, Spring Recruitment if they only have a handful of spots to fill? I'd say no. So, a chapter could know that they will be, say, 3 members under total for spring semester (due to graduation, transfer, drops, etc.), and give out 3 bids pretty much right away when school starts up. It's not really "unfair," because if you weren't on that chapter's radar, there wasn't going to be a spot for you this spring, anyway. You should have done Fall Formal.

Let me preface this with that I completely understand the COB process and what that means. That said, I can understand why people are upset with APhi and the way they went about things. First, Panhel has termed the recruitment process as "COB" for EVERYONE this spring---the term is used on all the promotional materials. In the past, they called it "informal recruitment" or "spring recruitment". I've heard that APhi took at least 6 girls last week before this process started. 6 girls is not just a "handful" of spots. Spring pledge class sizes over the last couple years have varied from 5-15. If APhi just wanted a 2-3 friends to become members through COB, that's one thing. But 5 or more? Personally, I think they should have gone through the COB recruitment that everyone else who needs/wants to fill spots has to go through. I mean, they could still take who they wanted, but it gives other sororities a shot at these girls and gives more girls a shot at APhi. I mean, from what I've heard, PiPhi only needs to fill 5-7 slots, too, and they are playing by the rules. It just doesn't seem fair to me, although I know that it's technically above board.

by giving bids to girls they were interested in who were clearly interested in them? come on, lol

^^^ No, by exempting themselves from the process that everyone else who wants to take a similar amount of women is going through. Sorta feeds into their whole "we want to be elite/tryhard" vibe. If they went through COB with the other houses, they could still take women that had mutual interest levels.

How many are going through spring?

There were like 30-35 girls at the orientation but it wasn't required to attend. I'm guessing it's closer to 50, and that girls have specifically signed up because of Pi Phi.

That's so disappointing to read. I hope they give the other houses a fair chance, I know that members really enjoy being in them. I surely hope that 50 aren't doing spring for just the 5-7 spots. That is a heartbreaker, so many of them will be disappointed. I hope they don't take bids to the other houses if they only want PiPhi though. its so disheartening to actives when their new members are disappointed but join anyways. There are so many great people in the other houses. Hopefully the pnms at the meeting were just excited because Pi Phi is higher ranking but will like the others after visiting those chapters too. I am glad that the sororities are trying to fill their spots though and allowing pnms the chance to get involved without having to wait until fall.

I went to all the events I could for axid and tri delta even though pi phi was my top and I didn't get asked to join either of them... so now pi phi is my only option but not by choice

Tri Delta still has one event on Tuesday. They haven't given out bids yet.

I'm so sorry, maybe they can tell you are such a Pi phi shoe in that they figured you would never go for them. It's still possible it was an oversight you'd be surprised how often that happens

What do you mean kicked them out? Like actually told them to leave?

In nicer terms, yes. Not "We don't want you, you need to leave" sort of way obviously but told them they should head out.

No idea…I left pretty early myself. I saw that, and had realized I didn't really fit in with the girls. There were girls who were there when I got there (and when those girls I saw get kicked out got there) who were still there when I left. So they may have been the ones they knew they were taking. I don't exactly know.

spring rush at pi phi was extremely uncomfortable, very forced, and clearly only meant for people that they knew they already wanted. having spoken to many other girls who rushed there, everyone seemed to have a very different experience when it came to how they were rushed which doesnt seem very fair. if pi phi was only going to take girls that they already knew, they shouldve just done COB for those girls and not stressed out everyone that came.

This is probably what happened. Pi Phi was only going to ask girls they already knew to join before Panhel called this COB. Then they had to do an open event. They told the girls they were going to ask already just to sign up and go through the motions. Pi Phi's event was lame. They clearly put no effort into it. They told those girls to leave because there was no point in them staying. What I DON'T get is why they did that. Why not let those girls stay for an hour and then leave. They never have to contact them again. Instead of the girls leaving feeling okay about it, they probably left feeling super resentful. It was rude. There wasn't any harm in them staying.

If that was the case, then Aphi would have been forced into holding an open event, too---which we all know didn't happen.

APhi would've had to if they hadn't gotten their girls a week before this was all announced. That's why they didn't have to.

no...it's not like aphi didn't know what panhel's intentions were for spring recruitment (and vice versa), so your comment doesn't make sense. i mean, panhel is the governing body of all the sororities. so, it stands to reason that if piphi was somehow forced against their will into participating in the formal spring recruitment process, aphi would have been too. it's not like panhel has rules for one sorority, and not for another. piphi participated in the formal process willingly. i know a lot of girls in piphi, and i don't buy that they rudely kicked girls out of their party for no reason. it doesn't make any sense. hopefully someone from piphi will come on here and clear things up.

I'll tell the story exactly as I saw it happen so everyone knows what I'm talking about. Maybe this happened to every girl who wasn't on Pi Phi's short list idk. But I didn't stick around long enough to find out.

I get into the house, sign in, take off my coat. As I'm going into the big room with the piano I hear "Welcome to Pi Phi" so that's when those girls entered. I saw one poke her head into the room before I'm guessing they went downstairs. I'm talking to an active at this point.

A short while later the girls come into the same room I am. There are two of them. They are introduced to two actives and they sit down near me. I notice an active pass by them twice and look at them which I find kind of weird. There aren't a lot of girls in the room so I can make out what they're saying.

The roaming active comes by after an extremely short amount of time again. I mean like these girls had been in the room for all of five minutes. I've long since realized that I want to head out myself so I'm looking for a gap in the conversation to say so, hence why I could kind of notice what was going on. She says "We don't want to keep you guys too long since we know you're busy, so you should probably head out."

Both the girls and the actives look extremely confused. Glances all around. I'm kind of taken aback by what I just heard. They take a moment, and then stand up and go. I leave maybe 5 minutes later.

It was just extremely weird.

do fall, its uch different and there will be more spots. Spring is tough in that it is so different from fall and a lot of actives don't quite know what they are doing when picking and recruiting in spring recruitment. Everyone, PNMS and actives, do better and there are more matches in fall.

They said on fb that they gave out bids last night.
