out of state
by: ??????OK. I know this will sound narrow-minded, and I don't really intend to be, but my sister (who is not Greek) goes to school here and she says there is a big difference between the out-of-state girls and the in-state girls. Do you agree with that and are there any houses that are especially appealing to out-of-state girls? I don't want to put a value judgment on any house, but I am from out of state and plan to go through rush. I would like to be a part of a sisterhood that is most welcoming to me. And sorry in advance if I offended anyone.

every sorority has out of state (OOS) girls and in state girls. Some have more than others of one population or the other, but it's not because they aren't welcoming of the other group. it's mostly because of existing relationships between potential new members (PNMs) and active sorority members---they are from the same town/area, went to summer camp together or went to the same high school. that's why, imo, a lot of girls from the same state end up in certain sororities. you'll be able to choose a sorority when you go through rush by whether you feel comfortable/fit in---i guarantee you that no sorority is going to cut you just b/c you're from OOS. in fact, the majority of people in the greek system are from OOS (LOTS of MN, IL, CA, NY, NJ, MD, DC, CT, MO, PA, OH etc).

Your sister is correct, to a certain extent. Out of state girls tend to be a bit more sophisticated and adventurous compared to the typical sorority girl who is from the Milwaukee suburbs an hour or so away. And I won't even talk about those Wisconsin accents! But you can find a niche no matter what if you give sorority life a try.

House wise it would seem to me that Gphi is heavily mn/Chicago, AXO heavily Wisconsin/Chicago, kappa seems to appeal to the coasts, Aephi and chi o to the east coast
Personally I find the east coast girls to typically be harder to befriend. This obviously is not true for all but as a girl from around the Midwest it seems to be that way.

OMG! The Wisconsin accent will drive you c-r-a-z-y. But you probably will find a home very easily in the Greek system.
