informal sorority recruitment

by: gdi

Does anyone know when sororities do informal recruitment? Like I know it's late fall and early spring, but does anyone know rough date estimates? Also is it better to do it in the late fall or early spring? Thanks!

Contact the Greek life office for these types of questions. They have all the answers and are more knowledgable about specifics than people on this site

only certain chapters who didn't get enough bids in the fall will do it the beginning of the spring semester. if you want to rush all of the houses wait til next fall

There are lots of reasons to do informal. If there are a lot of girls graduating in the fall you have the option to fill empty spots or you can snag up a roommate or someone else that is amazing before she can go through formal if she missed it that year for whatever reason.

There are a lot of ways and reasons all houses have spots open up in Spring,

The easy answer, often said in a catty way on GR, is that people dropped/deactivated after fall recruitment and the sorority HAS to do spring to make-up for people quitting.

However, there are a lot of other reasons why houses have spots and ALL houses have spots open up before the Spring semester starts.

People drop out of school, people transfer, people graduate in fall, people study abroad.

Here is how to fill a graduating senior's spot during her final spring semester. You have a member studying abroad who will be back in th fall. Recruit a replacement in the spring, she joins and is a member before fall. When the abroad member returns, the numbers still work because a senior graduated.

Also, its a bonus for the house if the abroad student was living in, left a bed open in the house when she left for the spring, and the Spring recruited member wants to live in now.

I think that for some houses there are rules about being enrolled full-time so that you do not count as a member if you are part time (e.g., a senior that does not need a full semester of classes)

Each national organization has different rules/guidelines for doing informal recruitment/COB. Some prefer that a house waits til formal to fill open slots if they have, say, less than 5 slots open. Other sororities want their local chapters to remain filled at all times, even if they have 1 slot open, so then that sorority is strongly encouraged to do informal recruitment/COB.

However, as a member of sorority that has participated in spring rush atleast once during my four years, I have found that the general preconceptions about why sororities do spring rush are somewhat accurate. Especially when everyone makes quota in the fall. Usually it is because of retention. There's no shame in saying that, I am not sure why people on this thread are so quick to dismiss it as a (the) reason. Sometimes you just have an off rush---you may have misjudged interest or membership qualities. I mean, rush is sorta short/superficial---almost every sorotity has members with regrets (from an active side or a new member side). There's nothing wrong with that, it's life. Mistakes can be made, and new, wonderful girls who are good-fits can be recruited. Every single sorority on this campus is thriving, so does it really matter who does informal recruiting? I sorta look at spring as an opportunity to get first "dibs" on great girls that would have otherwise gone through the following fall as sophomores. :-)

As a member of a house that has done spring, your reason does not apply and is not the general and usual reason. Our nationals highly encourage and push it. It's a dry run for fall, low pressure, and a lot of great people go through. It allows people already friends with a lot of us to feel they got the recruitment treatment and experience too. It takes the pressure off getting the perfect fall recruitment and fills all the early grad spots. We don't lower standards for spring. Statistically, as like your example, at least 5 actives will graduate in fall even with perfect retention. Also like someone else said, there are study abroad and part time student transitions that open spots too. Plus members are no longer obligated to be in if they have enough credits to graduate, regardless of fulfilling degree requirements. Spring recruitment is really easy and laid back anyways. It also takes the pressure off of making actives live in because there are always spring new members who really want to live in the coming fall.
