rushing as a transfer next year?

How competitive is rush at UW? Will rushing as a sophomore hurt me? How important are recommendations?

Congrats on transferring to UW! You're going to love it. As for rushing, I'm not sure if you're male or female? I can't give much advice for fraternity rush but for sororities I'll say that rush is getting more and more competitive each year. If you can get letters of rec, I would. At some houses a letter of rec gets you an automatic invitation to 2nd round which can be very helpful! If you can't, though, that's ok. If you follow the process to the end and maximize your options (rank all the houses you pref at) you are almost guaranteed a bid at UW. Good luck!

Pretty good advice, but a rec does NOT guarantee you a 2nd rd invite

Rushing at UW is not nearly as competitive as at some other major universities. I went to a school freshman year where more than half of the girls going through rush were cut. That was brutal. I pledged a good house there that has a chapter her at UW and transferred to UW as a sophomore (cuz it's pretty easy to get in as a sophomore). I now am living in the house. I'm happy where I am and am starting to make friends, but that's not always easy because sororities here tend to draw from specific areas and be cliquey, whereas my former house was more inclusive and diverse. Anyway, if you go through rush as a freshman you should have an easy time of it. And if it's not for you, well, that's OK, too. Because the Greek system here also isn't as strong as at some schools.

I understand that there are girls who go through rush as juniors and get a bid. I have never heard of that anywhere else.

that's pretty unheard of. id say about 50% of sophomores who rush get bids they end up taking and juniors generally don't get bids anywhere unless there are extreme extenuating circumstances

Agreed. The only juniors I know who've gotten bids were already friends with the majority of the girls in the houses to which they got bids. Like basically people thought they were an XYZ anyway so might as well make them one.

I transferred here from another school and I have never heard of a junior going through rush, much less making it into a house. And while sophomores make up about 5-10% of the girls going through rush at my old school, probably 2 or 3% get into a house. In my pledge class of 80 girls, we had 1 sophomore. So it sure is different here. Not better or worse. Just really different.
