slipping through the cracks

by: confused

From my honest opinion I feel like the Greek system here has failed so many girls this year, both sophomores and freshman. I have met so many wonderful girls throughout this process and I am so confused as to why so many girls were turned down. I know that the process here has become more cutthroat, but so many people did not receive bids--and I could see them being superb additions to the GREEK system and many houses. I kind of feel like the system here has really failed and allowed many girls to slip through the cracks. Anyone else feel like this?

Bid day is tomorrow...how do you know who received/accepted bids? If you don't go to this school, don't post just to stir up $hit.

I do go to this school... I don't know what bids people got, but I do know that many girls were called saying that they did not receive a bid... Do you even know how the bid process works? Because if you don't get a bid, a rho gamma calls you and tells you that you did not receive a bid. They also tell you not to come to the next day, so, yes, I do know that MANY people did not receive bids.

My Rho Gamma group was told that we'd get a call tomo if we didn't get a bid. So how do you know who got bids and who didn't? Honestly asking. My sister was in a sorority here (she graduated) and from what she told me, each sorority only gets their own pledge class list---they don't get the names of people in other sorority's pledge classes. So I don't understand how you'd be so sure that "so many" people fell through the cracks. Seems like speculation. My 2 cents.

My Rho Gamma just said she already notified people who didn't receive bids...

I think this post is mostly based on rumors (from what I've heard), but if it's true then I guess AXiD will have some great girls from which to choose.

Btw, I've never held a recruitment-related office, but from what I understand calls started tonight and will continue tomorrow morning. Waiting a little longer gives sororities a chance to choose from the "released" pool and extend snap bids, should they need to. Atleast that's what I heard.

I agree with the original post. I don't think it's fair that girls get all dressed up for 3rd rounds and find out they've only been called back to their last choice. That's such a punch in the stomach. I know 5 other sophomores who dropped because they all got one sorority (wont say which one) which was all of our last choices. I just don't get how you can feel so good about 3 houses and not get asked back to ANY.

It might feel incredibly upsetting, but it's a mutual selection process. I totally remember being devastated at pref when I didn't get a a certain sorority back. But I went to the sororities that I did have and received a bid to a house that I (now) love.

However, the first post is saying girls are going BIDLESS. The situation that you're describing is that the rushees didn't like the sorority that asked them back. That's a totally different story. Those girls did NOT slip through the cracks. It wasn't unfair---they chose to drop and not give the sorority that actually wanted them a chance. The system did NOT fail them, they failed the system. You're not guaranteed a bid when you go through rush, but if you maximize your options and keep an open mind, you will receive a bid somewhere 99.99% of the time with the RFM computer system.

People who don't get called back or get their first choice always feel like they got screwed. But newsflash, that's life so quit your complaining and deal with it. Plus, if you are open minded and really want to go Greek there are still options, AXiD, COB or spring recruitment.

i went through recruitment this year, and did not get a bid. I maximized my options and did not get a bid. this system is horrible and not fair.

If she maximized her options, that by definition means she didn't "suicide"/SIP.
I'm sorry, but questions I have for you, then, are were you really prepared for recruitment? Were you able to hold and carry conversations with sorority women and make good connections with them? Did you rank realistically (houses where you fit best, not necessarily where you aspired to be)? You have to kind of treat it like rounds of job interviews or speed dating. You have to have your A game ready! Are you a sophomore with so-so grades and/or reputation from last year? Were you prepared to accept a bid to ANY sorority on this campus?
I'm not saying any of this applies to you, but if it does, that might explain being released from the process entirely. Luckily, when that happens, there are opportunities like COB, and, this year, recolonization with Alpha Xi Delta (but keep in mind, that will be a competitive process as well).
