how difficult is pledging/ is there a hell week?

It depends. Each fraternity has a "hell week" but the difficulty is a wide range, especially among the top houses. Personally, if you find a fraternity that really fits you well, going through hell week is worth it, the bonds you make with your pledge class are some of the best you will have.
